I don’t think he’s complaining about the memorializing but the need of some people to drag the rest of us along with them. Grieve how you like but don’t expect the rest of us to react in the same way with the same intensity. ---

I think it is jerkish at best to come into this thread and add a nasty and knee-jerk lecture to Americans who are replying to it about how to feel about that day. I was not in Madrid when it was bombed. I think it would be rude at best to lecture the Spaniards in a thread devoted to remembering the tragedy of that day. The same applies here. This was not really the thread for political rants. ---

People can mark the event or not as they see fit- I don’t mind one way or the other. Maybe I’d roll my eyes if someone with no particular connection to the attacks does something way over the top, but it’s essentially a private thing. What I don’t like is being ordered not to forget what happened. I couldn’t forget it if I wanted to and the instruction kind of misses the point. Not everybody remembers dates, and the act of remembering (particularly on a specific day) really isn’t as important as responding the right way and learning the right lessons, is it? ---

My objection to the continuing reminders about the date is that I can’t just choose to remember selected parts of the day. The incessant media coverage and memorial bell ringings and so on catapult me right back into that horrible day and the surreal events following it just like I was experiencing it all for the first time. Yeah sure, that’s my problem and I should just deal with it, and for the most part I do. I would just rather forget the details and do my “never forgetting” on my own time, without being expected to do so on somebody else’s schedule. For some reason, this whole discussion reminds me of the episode of _Seinfeld_ where Kramer gets beaten by an angry mob for refusing to wear a red ribbon during the AIDS walk. ---

I think we’re better off as a country and as a society if we start to let the memory fade a bit. That one incident has had a distorting effect on our outlook and policies. ---

I was talking to my neighbor who’s kid was born after 9/11 and he mentioned that his son has never lived in an America that wasn’t at war. So I’m another one who thinks we could be putting this date in our rear view mirror. ---

Ehhhh, I just saw a post on Facebook from an acquaintance who stated the government let 3000 people die on 9/11 so they can strip away our rights. He’s got proof right there on this documentary on Youtube. ---

You know what else is coming up? The fiftieth anniversary\* of the JFK assassination. I’m dreading and bracing myself for the inevitable dredging up of the tired and implausible conspiracy theories. It was a lone nut. Accept it. \*And we’ve **got** to have a better word than “anniversary” when talking about a tragedy. Anniversaries are something to celebrate. I’m not celebrating JFK’s death any more than I’m celebrating four planes being hijacked.
