> Lost the novel, I just spent the past hour and a half on, so here’s the TLDR version: **kaylasmom** is in the hospital with CHF, and scheduled to undergo an angiogram (and hopefully angioplasty) on Friday morning.

I hope everything goes well. I hope it’s fixable and not secondary to other issues.

Yes, it’s illegal here, too. We just don’t pursue it. We have a big sign (like 2.5x3’) on the door that says all abandoned animals will be transported immediately to Animal Care and Control and will not be admitted to our shelter, but either no one reads it or no one gives a shit.

Thanks! Yeah, a poet I’m not, but sometimes I try anyway. Eh. I amused myself at any rate.

I got drenched this afternoon and spent the rest of the day mildly damp. I also went from feeling perfectly fine to having a nose-running, eyes-watering, sneezing and sniffing cold within the span of a couple hours. Now, I know a cold is caused by a virus, not actually by being chilly and damp, but all together it made a very uncomfortable day. Since I’ve never had a cold last just one day, I’m assuming tomorrow is probably going to be worse. :(

Seconded. Let us not stifle creativity.

My best friend is going through a shit divorce and I wish I could fix it for him. His wife figured out she was a lesbian roundabout the time she popped out their second child and decided they had no future together. After being a SAHD for three years, and following her job around the country for seven years prior to that, he has little work experience or any clue what he’s going to do now. And she’s like, ''Isn’t this great? Isn’t freedom great? Why aren’t you happppppy?"

She’s also like, ''You should talk to **Spice Weasel** more, so she can fix your emotional problems."

1. I can’t fix it.
2. it’s not my job to fix it. (repeat to self 10x daily)
3. It shouldn’t be fixed. Being devastated by grief is a healthy reaction to having everything you know and love pulled out from under you. I realize that is an inconvenient truth for her but her willfull ignorance about the fact that this is utterly fucking shitty for him and her need for him to be ‘‘okay’’ with it is really starting to piss me off.

Why do I need to remind my mom twice a day that this is MY house? Not hers. Anything that happens is MY responsibility. Gawd love her, but damn is it annoying.
My best buddy is renovating the breezeway. He’s work in construction for over 30 years. He knows what he is doing. He does not need a 79 year old managing him. She’s trying any way possible to find reasons to come over - “I’ll make potato salad for lunch” No, have food handled. “I should come pick up the scrap wood” No, it’s all being trashed due to wood ants.
Finally, I point blank stated this is not a barn raising, he likes to work alone. It’s a small room (10’ x 14’), more than two people out there are too many.
This morning I mentioned he brought over his sledgehammer, so I can breakdown and toss the old concrete double laundry tubs. She said “Oh no! I forgot all about them!” Mom, you couldn’t even lift a sledgehammer if you wanted, and it’s not your place to remember them.
I deal with this over landscaping. Over shoveling or raking.
I am so tired of it. I have become better about speaking up without trying to hurt her feelings, but it’s difficult walking that line.

A friend of mine is having some roofing done. He’s a cheapskate, so he hired an Amish crew (about half price).

Wanting to save even more, he asked if they’d consider revising their fee if he helped out. He was told they’d be happy to have him help, and they’d only raise their fee a bit.😃

cwPartner had back surgery just about a month ago. He’s off work for several weeks and he’s recovering very well. Unfortunately, this means he feels good enough (and un-medicated enough) to be really, really bored at home, which he deals with by pestering me for conversation while I’m at work. I get it, he’s lonely, limited in his allowed physical activity, and looking for ways to fill the time, but FFS, we have a house full of books, a crapload of stuff recorded on the DVR, and an Amazon Prime video subscription.

On the up side, now he understands why his Dad got so annoying after retirement.

She sounds lonely (or possibly needy). Is there a soup kitchen or food pantry nearby where you can volunteer her?

She used to volunteer heavily at her church. Unfortunately, church politics became too much for her. Plus, she is not a people person.
I know where it stems from - I’m sick, I’m her baby (47), I don’t know construction (as if she does), she and dad used to own this house, and she needs to be involved in everything.
I’ve been texting her pics, which seems to have appeased her.

How is kaylasmom doing?

As well as can be expected, thanks, and therein lies a tale:

For several years, until technology made her job obsolete, she had worked as a darkroom tech in some clinical settings (Tripler Army Medical Center, Schofield Barracks health clinic, and Los Alamitos Medical Center). Many were the times she came home from work with the news that a Cath Lab patient had coded and died on the table, and her impression was that the cause tended to be an adverse reaction to the contrast dye injected into the patient. So even though it’s over twenty years since she last set foot in a darkroom, she has lived in constant fear that if she ever had an angiogram, she would have about a fifty percent chance of having it kill her. Wholly unsupported by anything except her memory of how traumatized her coworkers sounded when a death was announced.

So, naturally, she was pretty resistant on Wednesday when the cardiologist stressed how important it was that she go through with it. He must have spent fifteen minutes contrasting his years of schooling, training, and practice with her twenty-two year old memories, and observing that her risk of dying on the table was microscopic compared to the risk she would be subjecting herself to if she refused to let her medical team obtain as much information about her condition as possible. He did talk her around, though (although even after she agreed to it, she wanted to go home for a week to get used to the idea. The doctor and I both shut that idea down).

So, at 1030 this morning, she was kind of stressed out as they wheeled her into the cath lab; an hour later, she came out, relaxed as you could want. Maybe the lingering effects of the Fentanyl were responsible for that in part; still, she was quite lucid, and happy that the procedure had been so easy to endure.

As to the outcome of the procedure, that wasn’t so rosy. The cardiologist found lots of plaque, but he also found that her coronary arteries (and indeed, her femoral artery) are naturally quite narrow, and any stent he might try to insert would likely not stay open. Additionally, their small size meant that she might not be a candidate for bypass surgery, either. A consultation with a surgeon confirmed this to be the case.

This leaves us with purely medical and lifestyle approaches, to prevent the CAD from progressing. Tighter blood sugar control, and a more aggressive regimen of meds and diet choices to better control her hypertension and cholesterol levels will be the order of the day.

The good news, such as it is, is that the heart muscle itself appears to be undamaged, and all cardiac functions are normal. I’m still gonna have to ask him how her troponin levels got somelevated withiut any damage to the myocardial tissue.

\*This
Month’s
Itty Bitty Ranting
Has us all decanting
Gin and scotch.

“Hiss!”
“Boo!”
Is what we’ll be chanting
(And no fair recanting
Rants you botch).

Fools
We
Wish we could dismember
When they make September suck…

Straight Dope Itty Bitty Ranting,
Hey, trolls, don’t push your luck!

'Cos with shitty gritty ranting,
We just don’t give a fuck!\*

Anybody want to write the bridge?

Your aunt died. As a grownup (40s) with a real grownup job (six figures) you can send fucking flowers. And you will- but you will hide it from your wife? Really? Your lazy, annoying wife who doesn’t even work will make you so miserable over a $200 flower arrangement for your mom’s dead sister that you’re going to hide it from her?! And when, at the wake, she sees the flowers with your family’s name on them, (because I know her) she’s going to get into it with you right there.

And you wonder why nobody wants anything to do with the lot of you…

I’m this close to not taking your calls anymore

Well, **kaylasdad** , sorry there’s no simple fix for kaylasmom, but it does sound like there is reason for optimism. And do remember that medicine is a constantly evolving thing so there may come procedures or techniques in the future to make possible what’s not possible now. Anyhow, good luck to her and you.

I love it when an old friend contacts you out of the blue to “do lunch and catch up”. You go to this lunch all bubbly and bouncy because oh, it’s your old friend!

Lo and behold, your old friend has an agenda: Come join my MLM. I need to “widen my network”, according to my “mentor”. Here, read this book. We’ll talk next week.

Two things:

1. You’re a smart person. REALLY smart. WTF?!?
2. I understand wanting to make money and I understand that your SAHM schedule doesn’t let you have a paying job, but seriously, an MLM everyone knows is an MLM and even TPTB know it’s an MLM and have decided to disguise it as a “leadership” program?!?!?

I’m just floored. WTF is your problem? You’re SMARTER than this, dammit!
