It’s been five years since I’ve seen the French Quarter. Five years since I had a beignet, walked down Bourbon Street, or listened to a street musician. I definitely think that needs to be remedied. Since one of my friends has a birthday in September, we’re planning to spend her birthday weekend down there, September 21-23. Of course, if she backs out on me, I’m still coming anyway, just with someone(s) else. Anyone up for it? ---

I’d definitely be up for it (mmm… beignets… haven’t had one since last summer), but I’m a good 5 or 6 hours north of N’awlins. If only I had my own car… or lived with my sister in Biloxi… ---

Racin, I know you’re in MS. What part? I’d be willing to sell my soul for someone to come with me to New Orleans, considering the friend that was supposed to come with me just cancelled. Which makes the third time she’s cancelled travel plans with me in the past two months. I’m about to start calling everyone I know, asking if they’d like to take a trip. No joke. I’m so going I can taste it now. ---

Hey, a good place to stay is the Chateau Motor Hotel. They’re relatively cheap (according the Quarter prices), but the rooms are just fine. Nice courtyard and pool too. My girlfriend and I stay there whenever we do our Girl’s Vacation together. Very close to everything. 2 blocks off Bourbon, 3-4 blocks from the French Market, etc. We had no problem stumbling home safely from Bourbon each night. ---

We might be able to make it down there around that time too. My last time there I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Royal st. It’s right next to Bourbon street and fairly inexpensive, well, at least compared to many of the others in that area. Worth a look if the Chateau is booked for any reason. I don’t know about bringing dry air…I hail from one of the swampiest swamps in the lovely aridity-challenged state of Alabama. I just have to get my friends to say that they’re going to come for sure (which should happen pretty soon) before I make definite plans. Thanks for the recommendations. ---

I LOVE the big NO. love it. used to do some rompin’ stompin’ in those parts with some local folks. The Mint, the Stage Door, the Bastille, the Dungeon, La Peniche, Gary Browns… stop by the Mint on Esplanade and grab a Separator to go for me on your way to the French Market, willya? Made enemies. And friends. and… well, it’s a gigantic wonder my buddies and I are not all dead. But it was _so_ wonderful… _sigh_ So how do you like MSU, racinchikki? An MSU alum, ---

O please let me join in if this comes together. I don’t need much of an excuse to blow out of Jackson “The Old Bold City” MS and head to New Orleans for a weekend. Count me in and cast my vote for early morning martinis and pancakes at the Audubon Cafe on St. Charles. ---

I wanted to give a referral to a really great restaurant my girlfriend and I went to when we were there but could not, for the life of me, remember the name. Then, lo and behold, I was flipping through my journal tonight and discovered that I had actually written down my travel in New Orleans. Gee, what a concept! :rolleyes: Anyway, the restaurant is on Royal Street, not far from Chartres, and its called “The Alpine”. I had the best meal there, hands down, that I’ve ever had. Their chef specializes in duck (or at least that’s one of his favorites) and when we went (about 9:00 one night), his duck style of the day was roasted duck that was then pan glazed in pineapple juice, rosemary and coconut milk. It was fabulous. Rosemary can be overpowering but this was just right - not too much at all. Give it a shot. The prices were reasonable for a nice dinner (most entrees under $20) and we used it as our “nice dinner” while we were there. Very attentive waitstaff, good selection of wine and liquors and good desserts. ---

Oboyoboyoboy, I sure do wish I could scoot down to N.O. for this. Man, it sure is tempting…it isn’t _that_ far from Memphis. I’m just jealous. But I’m saving my pennies for a bad ass costume for OhDope, and I don’t think Mr. S would let me go without him. Man o man, just color me jealous. ---

Well, I’ve actually found someone interested in going to New Orleans with me…so I should know after this weekend if I’m going to make reservations or not. I’d like to see this come together, so here’s hoping.
