…And don’t forget the attempt to move his hardboiled detective schtick to a youth ranch in Kerrville, Texas (Noir and buttercups!?)
I came in to mention his Myth series. The first few were delightful and good natured. The rest, well, made me think that the only reason he wrote them was to fulfill his contract.
What are you talking about? There are only seven Myth books. After Little Myth Marker Asprin planned to continue with a modified format, but he never go around to writing them. (nodnodnodnodnodnodnodnodnod) Don’t confuse me with facts!
Patricia Cornwell, although it is more like a slope/cliff of quality than unevenness.
Laurell Hamilton started out writing books. She now writes her own slash fanfic. Its really a shame. On the plus side at least there isn’t the “the author would never have her characters do THAT” debate that happens in slash fanfic. She is, mores the pity.
Oh, I agree that TPM light saber battle was definately better and more exciting than the Star Wars light saber battle. However, continuity wise between the movies it made the Star Wars battle look laughable.
Well, the way I see it, the original trilogy featured only really old, way-past-their-prime Jedis, who just weren’t able to swing a saber like they used to. Okay, there was also Luke, but Luke studied under an old and tired Yoda, so his style was never what it might have been.
The new trilogy, on the other hand, features young, fit Jedi in the prime of their youth. Naturally, they’re a whole lot faster and more acrobatic than a 70 year old hermit, a guy wearing 500 pounds of life support equipment, and a kid who learned how to fight from a two-foot-tall 900-year-old swamp creature. Worlds apart.
