I’ve tried to figure out why it works so well. I think some of the character acting is really convincing, for example Lazlo’s character has a lot of depth for a sitcom. It’s also well-paced. Guillermo’s series-long character arc is dynamic enough that it doesn’t feel dragged out. Sorry, Guillermo, this is what happens when you don’t assert yourself. ---

I’ve enjoyed a couple on Acorn recently. Still working on **Shetland** since it’s longer than my other pick. The show is an adaptation of Ann Cleeves’ (I really hope her middle name is “Of”) books- the stories are compelling, the acting is first rate, and the setting is gorgeous. Love the lead actor’s work (Douglas Henshall). If you like gripping mysteries without a lot of gore then this might be for you. My second pick is **Mayday** , a five part miniseries. The May Queen goes missing so where is she, is she alive, who took her? consumes the town. The town has more than its share of suspects and I found myself going from one to another about three times per episode. There is some violence but very little and not terribly graphic. Good thing to binge over the course of a few days. ---

I just mentioned Shetland about fifteen posts up, if you missed it. We just wrapped up S4 last night, and might take a few days’ break before diving into S5. Agree that the scenery is stunning and I love the Scottish accents. Still disappointed I haven’t seen any ponies though… ---

Thanks for the French series recommendations. I don’t think my two years of high school French will help me much but if they have English subtitles maybe I can see some good murder mysteries as well as refresh a bit of French. ---

Some what late to watching Good Omens 2. I like the characters and actors , but the season wrap up was very weak in my humble opinion. Mrs Mollusc will not bother if there is a season 3 and I’ll probably only bother if there is nothing else to do. Thinking about Lupin next, supposedly a crime caper drama sort of thing , also French, closed captions will be needed. ---

That was a difficult storyline but she does return. I’m looking forward to seeing the next new season, I will miss D I Perez but I LOVE Ashley Jensen (Extras, Catastrophe) and I’m excited to see her in a dramatic role. ---

Like you I am all for the original language but will need the English subtitles. Dubbed just throws me off, the lips are not synced and it generally sounds wrong. ---

She came back??? We had been watching _Shetland_ on our PBS which is always a frustrating experience , because they were broadcast on a really erratic schedule, and we missed things. More recently when I saw they were showing it again I watched an episode but it was from a very early season I’d already seen. As I said, frustrating. Guess I’ll have to try finding it on streaming. ---

Mrs. solost and I have watched a lot of foreign language shows on Netflix. With the ever-increasing balkanization of streaming channels, Netflix now seems to be 10% original content, 90% shows and movies from other countries. Many of which are quite good. We do use the dubbing, but we also have the subtitles on. I find it kind of interesting, and sometimes amusing, to see the differences between the subtitles (which I assume is a more accurate translation) and the dubbing (which I assume is written to match the lip movements as much as possible, while employing linguistic gymnastics to try to preserve the literal meaning as much as they can). ---

My problem with watching subtitled shows is that I tend to only half-watch and half-listen to shows while I do things like post here but that doesn’t work when I need to read subtitles to follow along. (That’s one reason I still go to the movies; in a dark room with my phone off or silenced and in my pocket, I’m forced to pay attention.) ---

Watching the first episode of _Lessons in Chemistry_. I loved the first season of Good Omens and was so excited for season 2. But I got two episodes in and I dunno… it’s just not the same.
