Schitt’s Creek was a cute show. Dan Levy has a new sitcom of sorts. It wasn’t quite as funny, but still cute.

It’s called Big Mistakes.

A show called “Chasing Shadows” (2014), which is kind of a darker version of “Monk”. It has many problems, but only one season so we sort of worked through it. But the lead character is effing annoying.

I’ve finally gotten around to watching **Corner Gas** , which I’m finding to be a very charming show. And very unabashedly Canadian (that’s not a bad thing, although I do feel like there are probably some references to Canadian culture that I’m probably missing). And the character Lacey adds a bit of a fish out of water element to the show, making it not entirely unlike Schitt’s Creek.

One major annoyance unrelated to the actual show, however. Up until maybe two weeks ago Corner Gas was included with Prime Video. Now you have to subscribe to an add on called Howdy in order to access it on Amazon. The change happened when I was just about finished with Season 2. But it is on Peacock. Thankfully, I get Peacock for free with my internet service, but I had to spend like half me weekend last weekend straightening out an issue with my account in order to actually access it. But that’s an issue for another thread.

I would not normally recommend anime outside of Cowboy Bebop. However, Nippon Sangoku is an exception. The first season is now complete on Prime and I highly recommend it for its great art style and compelling narrative.

Once an episode, or so I would say to myself " damn this is a really good show".

Netflix has a lot of detective fiction mini-series and I’ve binged several. The plots are often hugely convoluted and contrived; the “good guy(s)” have severe defects; etc. But it’s fun to watch plot “twists” and some of these series have 8 or 9 twists. I don’t know whether to recommend them or not.

> [@JohnGalt](#):
>
> There’s been a whole spate of Harlan Coben mystery novel adaptations lately. We also watched _His & Hers_, and we’re now are on _Run Away_. They are a bit contrived, much like the novels they’re based on, but in the end everything gets solved, sometimes in the last twenty minutes.

With 17 major plot twists, _Run Away_ takes the cake. I guess I’ll vote “Recommend” just so you can say you’ve watched the series that is greatest-of-all-time for MOST twists. But be aware that almost every character is annoying, especially the main male protagonist who can’t see a scab he won’t pick, or be sworn to secrecy without blabbing the secret later in the same episode. There’s actually an 18th twist at the end but I don’t want to spoil it.

I watched the first episode of the 5 episode series “The American Experiment” on Netflix, discussing American history (with famous talking heads like Al Gore, Mike Pence, Hillary Clinton, etc.). It was fine, but avoided saying anything particularly controversial (it ain’t Howard Zinn).

**Historian** : If I had to sum up in one word what the colonists were doing in the 18th century, it would be…

**Me** : Slavery.

**Historian** : Aspiration.

**Me** : Ooh, so close.

We’re watching **I Will Find You** on Netflix. It’s a mini-series, psychological thriller type. It’s pretty good. I do have to pause once in a while so we can discuss: who is that now?

**Primal** (Adult Swim via HBO Max)
I used to be a huge fan of animation as an art form, but I have really lost touch over the last few decades. I mean, I watch a lot of it still (Pixar, Bob’s Burgers, Futurama, etc.) but it’s for the jokes and storytelling; not the artistry. _Flow_ from a couple years ago, reminded me that animation can be a lot more than that, and I’ve been on the lookout for something similar.

_Primal_ is about the relationship between a caveman and a dinosaur (if that’s a deal breaker, I can’t help you) and contains no dialog. It is simple storytelling through imagery. I’m hooked! I’m only two episodes in and looking forward to the 28 I’ve yet to see.

ETA: It just occurred to me that I (kinda) compared _Primal_ to _Flow_. I should point out that (unlike _Flow_), _Primal_ is very violent and brutally depicts personal tragedy.

I watched that one. It wasn’t bad. The wife and I are now watching **A Woman of Substance** on Britbox. I was prepared for a period piece, which it is in part, but switches back and forth between older times and more modern times for the heroine. Unlike most British shows of this sort, there is some simulated sex going on, which was surprising.

I’m also watching **Sugar** (Apple+), starring Colin Farrell, Amy Adams, and a really good supporting cast. John Sugar finds people for a living. Grabs you right off and holds your attention, at least so far (two eps in).

My wife and I checked out at the end of E1. We’re not big fans of the “What I need to do to prove myself innocent of these criminal charges is to commit even MORE CRIMES” genre.

I guess that people were aspiring…to do stuff.

The second episode got more into the context of slavery at the time of the revolution.

**Light of my Lion**

We are two episodes into this Japanese show. It’s about a guy who has a pretty severely autistic brother. They are very rigorous in their routines. One day, a little boy shows up who calls himself “Lion”.

Protagonist tries to see if “Lion” is his missing sister’s son. He has suspicions the boy is.

Only two episodes in, it’s pretty cute.

Note: Japanese only. No English dub.
