I think Gollum/Sméagol might have had a habit of that as well?

_Cruel men hurts us. Master tricksed us._

_We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses._

Does this mean hobbits are canonically Canadian in middle earth lore?

Watching _Blue Skies_. The dog and the scenery make it worth watching all by themselves. The acting is okay but not Emmy worthy.

As I continue through the vast original _Perry Mason_ series, I’m amused by some of the occasional bits of dry humour that get thrown in, and Raymond Burr’s excellent characterization of the Mason character. Example:

Perry Mason is in some public place, like an airport, and two men approach him. One introduces himself as attorney for the other. The other then launches into a lengthy tirade peppered with accusations and threats while Mason listens with his customary calmness and says nothing.

When the tirade finally blows over, Mason turns to the attorney and says:
“Who’s your noisy friend?” 😁

And a few hours later, I knocked out the entire series. I’m not usually into this genre, but I thought it was pretty good.

> The makers of the show tried to get the cast to get the accent right. Opinion on whether they succeeded is mixed:

It seemed like there was a bit of Irish thrown in there as well. But from what I’m reading, a Newfoundland accent does have some Irish roots (and maybe some of the characters were Irish?).

I also noticed at least one of the words they smacked an S on to the end of almost seemed like a purposeful homage to Letterkenny. I wish I could remember what it was, but it was something (that seemed) blatant, like “allegedlys”

Edit, I found it, it was Calvin saying “I appreciates what you did back there”. To be clear, I’m not saying it was on purpose, just that once I noticed, what I considered, Letterkenny talk, the ‘appreciates’ line seemed like it was on purpose (basically confirmation bias on my part).

For me it’s his role in _Westworld_ that sticks with me. Although he’s now voicing Abaddon on _Haunted Hotel_, the new season of which we are watching.

I’m on the last episode of _Lucifer_ Season 3 and have just finished _The Diplomat_ Season 4. Both these excellent series are on my short list for Five Best TV Series of All Time.

One of the biggest differences between these two series is how much of it one gets per year. The 6-season _Lucifer_ had 93 episodes (@ abt 45 minutes?) altogether, including 26 just in Season 3. The 4-Season (so far) _The Diplomat_ has 30 episodes (@ abt 60 minutes?). Why is that anyway? To this layman the locations and special effects of of _Lucifer_ seem like they’d be harder to set up.

And as XOldiesJock points out, much of the meager 8 hours of content in a _The Diplomat_ season is wasted by tedious and useless intra-couple banter.

> [@Gordon\_G](#):
>
> > [@XOldiesJock](#):
> >
> > **The Diplomat.** Season 3. The circumstances around which the plot revolved were interesting enough, but much too much soap opera slowing it all down. And it could have been a tight six episodes instead of eight had the characters spent a whole lot less time humping in the midst of a world crisis.

Most of my series-watching is years after the initial release; all Seasons are available for binge-watching. _The Diplomat_ Seasons each end on a cliff-hanger; Season 4 may end on the cliffiest hanger of all; and I will have to wait 12 months to see the story progress. **I don’t have that kind of time!**

> [@Gordon\_G](#):
>
> I _ **loved** _ Season 1 but it had a pace and level of suspense that was hard to keep up. (And the man Hal “killed” in the Season 2 finale was my favorite character.) To keep up the pace the series must zig and zag from one unlikelihood or contradiction to another. It was never clear whether Kate thought President Penn was an admirable genius or a treasonous criminal.
>
> “Soap operas” can add spice but the banter between Eidra and Stuart in Season 4 is the same as in Season 1.
> …
> I’ll keep watching, but it’s not a candidate for Top Recommendation.

I must retract this partially. I certainly rate it above Keri Russell’s famous _The Americans_. My biggest complaint is that there isn’t more of it! I’, expected to wait 12 months for 4 hours of content (after soap opera is excluded)?? But that’s my own fault, I guess, for watching a series not yet available for Complete Binge!

I generally like realism – my favorite miniseries are almost documentaries. But something shared by the two series is that they are fantasies, far-fetched fiction. In _Lucifer_ celestial beings are interacting with the LAPD; In _The Diplomat_ the U.S.government is operated by a malignant narcissist with underlings afraid to tell her she’s mentally incompetent. OTOH Season 4 was presumably written recently, so perhaps “historical genre” best describes this genre.

Finished last night. We enjoyed it as well. Almost felt too short, at only 6 30-40 minute episodes. The plot developments in the last couple episodes felt a bit rushed. I wonder if it’s a one-and-done, or if it’ll get a second season-- the ending hinted at the possibility of a season 2.

Ha, yeah, I kept thinking ‘Letterkenny’ too, specifically Squirrely Dan. I always kind of thought the added-on 's’s were an affectation of his alone, not part of any regional accent. But maybe his character was supposed to have originally been from Newfoundland.

There’s a Canadian lineman I watch on youtube (Bobsdecline) and until yesterday, I never noticed he also tacks an S on to the end of some words. It appears he from New Brunswick and, while I have no knowledge whatsoever of regional dialects in Canada, he’s at least on the same side of Canada as Newfoundland.

**Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story**

Some of this was fun but it diverts from history quite a bit, from what I’ve read about the actual events. A side story about Aileen Wuornos gets placed into it, which is kind of weird. We are supposed to identify with her along the way, but we get a rape scene just to be sure. The story of Countess Báthory also winds itself around the Borden story a bit and Lizzie has an affair with the housemaid and the two conspire to axe Lizzie’s parents. Some of it is gruesome but a lot of the blood during the murders was added in with CGI. I did like the music.

We watched ep.1 of _Phony_, a new show on Hulu (not sure if it’s a Hulu original or from another network). Basic premise: a high school student, who seems popular and well adjusted, and is close to his mother who is the principal of his school, gets into a car accident and is in a coma for a week.

When he comes to, he is convinced his mother has been replaced with an imposter. He thinks she looks different, and there are other ‘tells’ that also convince him. He shares this with his friends and even a police detective, who all think he’s imagining things, of course. He keeps comparing how she looks post-coma to old pictures of her. There is a difference, but it is _very_ subtle. Maybe a slight prosthetic change to her nose?

Of course, this being a TV show mystery, the kid will turn out to be right about his mom (no spoiler, just my ‘no duh’ guess). But I kept thinking of [Capgras Syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capgras_delusion)– a real-life psychiatric condition, often caused by a brain injury, where a person is convinced that their loved ones have been replaced by identical imposters. I won’t be surprised if he gets ‘diagnosed’ with that in episodes to come.

Anyway, it’s early going, but the first ep was intriguing enough to keep watching.

I really enjoyed season 1 of **The Terminal List** and the prequel series **Dark Wolf** (in spite of the negative reviews) so I was excited when season 2 of Terminal List dropped yesterday. Unfortunately, season 2 seems like toothless, run of the mill, production line television. The plot is nonexistent and it seems to just be an excuse for mindless action sequences with familiar characters. I’ll probably watch a couple more episodes out of boredom, but season 2 seems to be a nothingburger.

Apparently the settlers to that part of Newfoundland were from Ireland, and the accent is not too far off from that. At any rate, it’s not the usual Canadian accent apparently.

We’re three episodes into **From** , now airing on Netflix. It was originally on MGM+. The plot: People find themselves stranded in a small town from which no one can escape. And there are zombies that come out at night, or something like zombies. They look like normal people, but they can kill you nonetheless. (Why all this is going on hasn’t really been explained as yet.) It’s interesting enough to keep going with it. There are 30 episodes available. I really wonder if they can keep this up that long without going the way of “Lost” or other shows that were intriguing at first but then overstayed their welcomes. And I read there is a 4th season airing on MGM+. So far, so good.
