I tried, I really tried NOT to use poisons in my lawn to kill fire ants. At least I tried until there was an ant mound the size of a 1968 Volkswagen. Then I only used the poison in the general area. Then the colony moved to just the other side of the poison zone. I dutifully scattered just enough poison for that area. They moved to another part of the yard, then split up and covered several areas. Now I treat the whole lawn (they went to a neighbor that no one likes!).

Fire ants must all die now. Their bites make you miserable and can cause scarring. I’ll take snakes over fire ants.

Not that I’m defending them or anything, but what good things do they do for the environment? (apart from clean up human waste that is).

I didn’t use to think there were fire ants out in the Anza-Borrego desert where I live. Or at least, if there were, I thought they stayed outside like good little ants.

Then one night, I crawled into bed and thirty seconds later vaulted screaming from it. I don’t know how it happened. I couldn’t figure out how they got in, but my bedroom carpet was crawling with the little buggers, and they had infested the space between my top sheet and comforter. When I climbed into bed, I disturbed them, and I ended up getting a bunch of bites all over my body.

My landlord - wonderful person that he is - had the pest control people out that day.
