Set tub: normal, regional, or wrong?

Yep, slop sink is what I’ve always called it. Although I’ve been a painter and used it for “slop paint.”

I never heard the term before today.

Here it would be the laundry tub, laundry sink, wash tub, or wash sink.

Butler sink is the term I know.

I have heard them called deep sinks, slop sinks, utility sinks or even laundry sinks, but never set sink.

Another NJ/NY poster.

I think I called that the laundry tub, as I was growing up. But to be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sure that was its name so much as a description.

We call it a ''deep sink" 'round here.

Set tub, not set sink.

One more anecdote …

Grew up in So Cal, lived in FL, NY, and several mid west locations. I’ve worked with people from all over the country. Nnever heard of “set tub” before. “Utility sink” would be my prefered term although “laundry room sink” would work too.

Grew up in PA, live in MA, always called it a utility sink. I’ve found that contractors & plumbers here in MA call it a “shit sink”, at least when there are no children or ladies present.

i’m from the deep south–always called it a utility sink or laundry sink. never heard your term before.

I grew up in Baltimore, and in my house it was called a stationary tub, a laundry tub, or a set tub. Never a sink. My wife grew up in Ohio and calls it a laundry tub.

West Coast. Out here, it’s called a “corpse dissolver.”

SF native, never heard it. I think I’ve heard “utility sink” before, and I think I could figure out most of these other terms, but not “set tub.”

I wonder if the “set” in “set tub” is meant to connote two basins. The old ones I remember always had two basins-- a set of tubs? Just a guess.

Anyway, I’ve always called it a set tub, and I have no idea where I picked that up from.

We call it a “utility sink.”

Quick story: My office has a little tiny sink in the alcove that holds the microwave, frig and cabinets. A 180 degree turn and you are facing a closet with cleaning supplies and a big utility sink.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen people try to fill big containers from the little kitchen sink. I tell them to “turn around, you idiot.”

Next time, tell them to use the set tub and see what they say.

Actually, I don’t think I’d call it that unless it was in a garage or laundry room. Don’t ask me why, but it just has that connotation to me.

NY / NJ – laundry sink or utility sink. Never heard of set tub.

Checked with a Mainer I know - she says it’s a washing sink. (Laundry is washing in Maine.)

I’m from Iowa, and I don’t even think we had a name for 'em.

I grew up in Michigan and Florida, and have always called it a deep sink. I believe that’s a common Navy term for it as well. Never heard of a set tub.

Never heard “set tub” in the Pittsburgh area (and we’re known for some odd words).
I’ve heard my husband call it the “sanitary sink.” I’ve never heard that term outside his family, but it makes sense to me.
We always called it the laundry tub(s).
