…as well as Yorktown
Take a closer look at your original spelling… and mine.
My apologies. As a D&D geek, I should have noticed that.
Has anyone else seen the follow up from 2001, Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure?
In addition to being a really delightful documentary, it also led to me feeling bad for a complete stranger. You see, in the first half of this film there’s a fair amount of footage of the crew playing with a bunch of dogs they’d brought with them. The adults in the audience were able to put two and two together between all of Shackleton’s men survived ↔ the dogs are no longer mentioned, but as we left the IMAX theater a little boy of about 8 turned to his dad and asked “But Dad, what happened to the dogs?” Awkward.
Shackleton shot the cat, too!
That’s true; one night, Mrs. Chippy soup was on the menu.
The best known book about this expedition is now on the best-seller list.
Another ship of his has been found [although it sank a long time after he died]
A new documentary coming up:
Some interesting new information has been discovered about the ship:
And the actual scientific article:
I’m pretty sure that we already knew that from either Shackleton’s book, or from other writings by him. I’ve read his book, but can’t recall if that was in there (been too long). Honestly, I’d be surprised if any ship of the day could bear up under that relentless crushing pressure. The ocean bottom is littered with exploration ships that were thought to be able to weather the ice, both north and south.
