_Somewhat_ and _downright_ are arguably mutually exclusive, terms, so one can be forgiven for defaulting to _downright_. ---

I think “somewhat” is often used as a kind of filler word that doesn’t really mean anything, so I assumed by the word “disgusting” that was closer to the poster’s feelings. Those filler words can be tricky. As the old Hemingway advice goes, “Every time you are tempted to write “very,” replace it with “damn,” and your editor will remove it accordingly.” ---

It’s a modifier to indicate understatement. Recall the line from _King Rat_, “That’s just about OK”, the response from the British POW when the American prisoner gave him a fried egg. ---

Yes, he started as a writer at Saturday Night Live, where he worked as a writing partner with Bob Odenkirk. He then left that job and flew from New York to LA to be a writer for The Simpsons. Then when Late Night needed a new host, Lorne Michaels (the guy who runs SNL and has a lot of power at NBC) suggested Conan and he has been a talk show host since. ---
