I’m fairly sure the real reason he is trying to convince everyone here that he is some sort of badass is because in the real world he is so very sad and insignificant. Here on this message board he can pretend to be something he’s not, which is someone who actually matters. And now I’m done feeding this narcissist. It’s hard to shame a narcissist, because narcissism is such a common defense against shame. It’s just more attention to him, which he feeds off. Same goes for insults. I’m just putting him on my ignore list so I’ll remember not to feed him in the future and move on, knowing that having to live in his head is far worse punishment than any method I’m willing to use. ---

I didn’t say they exemplified the characteristics of _all_ sociopaths (or those with APD, if you prefer), but rather those of _some_. The point is, persons who weren’t sociopaths wouldn’t behave in this manner - not that all sociopaths would do so. I have a little direct experience in this matter, as my first cousin pushed me down a flight of stairs when I was four years old. Without rage, without provocation, without any visible emotional affect. This same cousin went on to be physically abusive to his own disabled mother, all the while presenting to the world a facade of successful normalcy. He is presently a respected pediatrician in Philadelphia. There are of course many books on sociopaths, but one I found quite readable and interesting was _“The Sociopath Next Door”_ by Martha Stout. The DSM-IV has seven qualifiers for qualifying for [ASPD](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder), and I’ve only seen Shag show evidence of two of them; deception and lack of remorse. Three are required to qualify. Lack of remorse is also part of [Narcissistic Personality Disorder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissistic_personality_disorder) as well, and it’s a far closer fit IMO. Given that they are both Cluster B personality disorders, similarities between the two disorders are not surprising. I’m not doubting the story or your assessment about your cousin however. That does sounds like a sociopath, and I’m sorry you had to deal with them. ---

He’s been here for 18 years - why all the sudden outrage? I’m not defending **Shag** or not defending him, I’ve just never seen a poster of this length of tenure receive such a pitting. I’m sure it happens, I’ve just never seen it. I haven’t seen a lot of things, I have no idea what a carborator looks like\*\*,\*\* for example. ---

It’s just that - now that I think about it a bit more - that quote of **Shagnasty** ’s where he describes pushing his infant brother down because he “didn’t like him” hits a bit close to home for me. I wasn’t injured or anything in the incident with my cousin, but it certainly showed me in no uncertain terms - well before I understood it on a conscious level - that some people are broken and dangerous from the time they can walk. As I said in the closed thread that immediately prompted this OP, I think **Spice Weasel** may have been more accurate in her armchair assessment of NPD. As you say, there’s a good deal of overlap. I’m just glad that **Shagnasty** is not someone with whom I am forced to have interactions… ---

Probably because for the first decade or so of his tenure, he primarily posted about how miserable he was in his marriage. It took some time for his youngest daughter to reach dateable age and for him to extricate himself from his wife, so that we could all enjoy the horror show he’s become. ---

Shodan, Diogenes the Cynic, Lissener, Der Trihs just off the top of my head were the subject of more than one pitting.
