As I answered a recording engineer friend a few years ago, who asked me for the three greatest pop songs of all time (in no order):

**Hard Day’s Night** Lennon-McCartney / Beatles

**Mood Indigo** Ellington-Strayhorn

**Superstition** Morris / Stevie Wonder

Going back a ways, and specifying **country/hillbilly music:**

**I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry** Hank Williams

**The Prisoner’s Song** Guy Dahlhart

Many more – I can’t think of them right now

Going back a ways, and specifying **race music/blues:**

**Pony Blues** Charley Patton

**Green River Blues** Charley Patton

**Kansas City Blues** William Harris, recorded 1927

**Big Road Blues** Tommy Johnson

Anything by Blind Blake.

Flashing forward, pretty much anything by Kurt Cobain, or Johnny Cash, lots of early/mid-period Beatles and lots of songs Elvis did before they drafted him.
