Share your Sesame Street Memories

These are the people in your neighborhood
In your neighborhood
In your neighborhooooood
Yes, these are the people in your neighborhood,
They’re the people that you meet
When you’re walking down the street
Each day!

Sesame Street was my first glimpse that life might be different in other places.

Ohhhhh, I remember wondering about that wire when I was 5 because I knew Big Bird was a costume and not a puppet. Oscar was always my favorite though, he was the only one aside from Harry thast wasn’t all wimpy.

Aw, thanks, Shy guy!
I’m glad you liked the Alligator King.
You do have to pick up Sesame Street Unpaved. I got mine on the bargain books table at barnes & noble over a year ago, and according to the sticker still on it, it was a big 4.98. Deal!
I may be your hero, but Frankd6 is mine.

That letter I song has been on the fringes of my memory since this discussion started.

thanks!

Speaking of awkward positions for puppeteers, I always thought it was cute how Ernie and Bert used to “lay down” on their beds. They always only had one corner of the blanket over them. I always hoped I would catch a glimpse of the puppeteer’s arm.

The skits with Grover as the waiter and the disgruntled customer guy were funny, too. I liked how they always did sound effects for Grover’s feet!

I would certainly buy a DVD with all this stuff on it.

(clears throat)

"Some of the words that begin with I they get to be quite tricky
There?s intersection and illegal, irritate and icky

Beep-beep! Beep-beep!
Many words that begin with I are longer than itchy and into
There’s impossible and incredible and important too.

The letter I is quite a pip,
I think I?ll take him on my trip
We?ll have some fun, and do a flip,
Into my car, away we’ll zip
I’m glad to be with the letter I
Cause he?s so irresiiiiiiiiiis- tible!
Beep beep! Beep beep"

Thank you.

Thanks

That would have bugged me for a long time! I’m so happy I started this thread

According to my mom, that always made me cry hysterically, because I thought the baker was hurt. She’d have to explain to me that he was fine. She must have done a good job because now I think people falling down is a hoot.

Favorite guest spot: Susan Sarandon in a trenchcoat, standing outside the Count’s castle, in the rain, with a newspaper on her head…

And I’d always heard that she didn’t ever make references to “that movie”.

Sarandon’s gotten a lot more comfortable with that role over the years. There was a time when she refused to talk to interviewers about it, period, but during the 20th (25th?) anniversary of RHPS, she gave a gracious and very warm interview about it.

I do want to say that as an adult, the guest roles have always been a highlight for me. A celebrity earns big time points with me for appearing on Sesame Street. My favorites were Robin Williams explaining why a shoe is not a living thing, and Bill Cosby counting children (he’s not able to get an accurate count because the kids keep hiding behind him.) The one that surprised me the most was either Michael Stipe from REM, or that newsguy… I can’t remember if he is McNiell or Lehrer…Lehrman? Something like that, anyway.

Oh! And how could I forget–the little typewriter on squeaky wheels that would type out words on himself?

*“Noony, (squeak, squeak) noony, noony, noony (squeak, squeak)”

This thread is uncovering all sorts of long-buried Sesame Street memories.

Batty batty bat batty bat batty bat batty bat
One two three count!
Batty batty bat batty bat batty bat batty bat
Won’t you dance with me doing the batty bat?

Those little bats flying around were so cool.

This is the best archive I’ve found for the lyrics to Sesame Street songs. Have fun!

I noticed today (2/13) that they were showing episode #3999! That means that tomorrow (2/14) they should be showing episode #4000.

Wow. The Simpsons has nothing on Sesame Street.

Imagine if 4000 were the number of the day…

The new nmbers song!
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-…(two hours pass)…-3999-4000!

“Have a nectarine Gonk.”

“They all jumped rope till the rope had broke so they all ended up telling knock-knock jokes, the ladybug 12…”

“Near…Far!”

“12 Bannana Cream Pies!..(crash)…And that’s the song of 12”

That was always so depressing, and the pie gook looked like gore to me.

Who was Kermit Love?

In the credits was the line:
“Dedicated to Kermit Love.”

“DAFS” he said to himself.

I watched with my kids for years. As for celebrity appearances, does anyone remember the song “Put Down the Duckie (If you want to play the saxophone)” which appeared on a fund-raising special. That had tons of people, jazzmen, actors, and Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman dancing around. It went on forever, but I wish I could see it again. It was just a plain good song.

We had a tape with 10 tiny turtles on it. Also one of our favorites. Remember Miami Mice?

My daughter auditioned for SS, for some segment where she would be juggling devil sticks behind the action. She didn’t get that one, but she did work for a SS director on an industrial. She knew how to handle kids real well.

There’s a cd out in Germany with different techno remakes of that song. I find that very .

I miss the pinball counting 12 bit. That needs to come back. Stupid Elmo.

I remember one of those kid’s shows had a part where they showed how milk came from the cow to your table. There was a crying baby and a milk truck rushing to the store and at the end the baby got a bottle and stopped crying. There was another part similar to this where they showed how they got sugar out of a sugarbeet.
