Just a followup to Cecil’s recent article [Does shark cartilage prevent cancer?](http://www.straightdope.com/columns/041022.html). Apparently, Gary K. Ostrander, a professor at Johns Hopkins, has been doing work in the field, and [has come to the same conclusions](http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=571&ncid=571&e=2&u=/nm/20041202/hl_nm/cancer_sharks_dc):

> In the journal Cancer Research, Ostrander and his colleagues detail 42 known cases of tumors in sharks and related species, including three previously unreported cases of cancer in spiny dogfish and tiger sharks. It even appeared that the animals’ cartilage itself was vulnerable to tumors.
> The true incidence of cancer in sharks is not known, the researchers say, but even if it is rare, the cartilage-cure theory holds no water.

You’ll all recall that Cecil stated in his article that sharks could get cancer, even in their cartilage. Good job as usual, Uncle Cece.

Aaaagh! Can you believe it–my first new thread in almost a year, and, not only do I use it to talk about shark cartilage, I screw up the coding! [Here’s Cecil’s article.](http://www.straightdope.com/columns/041022.html)
