Tangent: I once heard “the whole nine yards” referred to the size of a cement truck in the 20’s or so. That is, 9 cubic yards. So if they would have to pour out ALL the cement, the foreman would shout: “Pour the whole nine yards !”, or words to that effect. ## Can anyone verify if my knowledge of American Slang is somewhat accurate ? I shave wet, against the grain, always. Gillette Sensor, and Gillette Gel. No matter what kind of razor I use, I can’t get a close shave. Even the mighty Mach 3 (which is the best yet) leaves me with a light gray shadow. I’ve been cursed with a dark beard. And shaving with an electric, is like shaving with the palm of my hand. It does no good, whatsoever. Is anyone else out there unfortunate enough to have a really dark beard like me? Adam ---

OK, Vestal, if you must know - for about 30 minutes after waking I am incoherent, half blind, hear out of one ear, and bump into walls, doorjams, and other family members. I also feel no pain. Who needs alcohol? Just wake me up and I’m wasted! Does this sound like someone who should be holding a sharp instrument to his throat? ---

After the shower. Dry. Against the grain. Discovered in the army that it is the _fastest_ way to become alert and ready for action. I’m surprised more people don’t use electric razors. I’ve used the top-of-the-line Norelcos for years and have been very happy with the results. I usually shave while sitting on the can after my shower in the mornings. Hey, I’m not doing anything else while I relieve myself. Might as well put the time to good use. Sort of multi-tasking, I guess. (Sorry if that was more info than people wanted to know.) ---

As long as that post was, I should clarify something. I used to shave _against_ the grain, then started shaving _with_ the grain. It took a couple weeks of shaving with the grain to get the same closeness that I had gotten when I shaved against it. * * * “Well, walk it off!
