Sappo: For me it’s not the smell that is the problem (i keep it clean down there), it’s just that I like how it feels. All smooth and silky. Those of you getting rashes probably went too fast or went against the hair. If I forget to go with the grain I will get a rash down there. Like Drain says, a Mach 3 razor is wonderful. It cuts close and gives you much less nicks (actually I cant remember getting nicked at all while using a Mach 3 razor, but can remember plenty of times when I used a regular 2 blade razor). ---

It is unnattractive TO ME and a major turn-off TO ME and I would NOT be able to enjoy sex if I felt ugly and unsexy, no matter WHAT the person I was with felt. In addition, hair is uncomfortable. It pulls and catches and tugs and HURTS. I might as well jump in. Because I sweat so profusely, to the point of ruining otherwise perfectly good shirts, I started shaving my underarms. This allows the anti-perspirant to go directly on my skin and does help me sweat less. So I decided one day, what the hell, and shaved my pubes. I found the smoothness down there interesting, and since I have a thing for shaved women (although my wife won’t do it. Damn!), I found it somewhat auto-erotic as well. There was also the added advantage of not getting condoms (our birth-control method of preference) getting caught in the short curlies, which is about the quickest way to lose the salute, in my book. I’ve been shaving my main pubic hair, my penis and my scrotum for about 2 years now. You guys who have trepidation about approaching that area with a razor crack me up. You’re not gonna be hacking away with a meat cleaver, guys! It’s shaving. You are in no more danger of castrating yourself than you are of cutting off your nose when you shave your face. Nicks and cuts seldom happen, but a little piece of tissue stops the bleeding, and shaving talc hides the blemish afterwards. Itching is not a problem, after the first few times your skin gets used to being under the razor. Dunno if it’s more sensitive during sex (but then I use a condom, so some people would say sex for me is like wearing socks while showering). But it’s definitely cleaner. Now you all know a helluva lot more about me than you ever wanted to. ---

An ex-girlfriend and I shaved down once. The actual shaving was kinda cool. Sex after was good. What wasn’t so good was the hair growing back about 2 weeks later. I call this the Sergeant Carter phase. It is truly painfull having two little genital marines rubbing their heads together. ---

Anyone ever hear anything about laser hair removal? Supposed to be permanent, but I wonder if it leaves a scar. Secondly, I’ve had this idea about Shaving AND Nair. Shaving itches because hair is square, so when it grows back, it has 4 little points at the end. It stops itching when those 4 points get worn down a little. Now Nair sorta eats away hair chemically. DON’T worry! I recognize the fact that the stuff could burn the sensitive skin too! BUT, what if the day or two after you shave, you apply a little Nair down there (poet and didn’t realize it) with the shower running. You wait maybe for 1/4 of the recommended time on the bottle of Nair, just enough to eat away at those 4 points, then jump in the shower and wash it off quickly. I wonder if this would work? The chemicals aren’t there long enough to burn the skin, but they might smooth out the ends of the hair. I have yet to try this! It is open for experiment, maybe a test case of doing it quickly on one side and seeing if it helps. Anyone wanna try? And as for the waxing- I _LOVE_ to do it to my wife! My little S&M binge every few months or so. She says its easier too- I can get better angles and a better grip on the stuff than she can. Problem is that after I do it, I’m horny as hell, and there ain’t no WAY that she’s gonna let me fool around immediately after getting ripped! ---

While I’m too lazy to keep up with it now, I used to shave “down below” on a regular basis. I kinda liked it. Nice and smooth. It’s definitely something you have to keep up with though. The gym reference was right on too. I was a little bit uncomfortable in the locker room, worrying what the other fellas thought. Maybe a little homophobia peeking out… ---

My personal opinion is that pubic hair was put in place as a lubricant. Remove it and you get enough friction to set your crotch on fire. Add the stubble factor a few days later and it’s like fucking a porcupine. That said, I love it when the wife shaves and I keep mine very short as a rule so go figure. BTW - The wife also hates it when I have a new growth of beard for the same reasons listed above. ---

Is this more than you ever wanted to know about your fellow dopers? I shave on a regular (about once a week) basis. Always in the bathtub - I wear contacts, can’t wear 'em in the shower, and like to be able to see what I’m doing 😉 I used to just keep it trimmed really short, with scissors, but cut myself far more often that way than I do with a razor! After about the 3rd or 4th go, the razor rash no longer happened for me. The 2nd day after shaving is the only bad day - when the hair is just starting to grow back, any friction can hurt. Talcum powder, loose undies and a dress that day, and my SO being gentle take care of it. Why? I agree with Opal. That fresh out of the shower feeling doesn’t carry through the day if there is a lot of hair there to trap sweat. The shorter it is, the less of a problem it is. And I do shower every day, thank you 🙂 My SO tried it once (in a turnabout-is-fair-play gesture), but it didn’t do a thing for me - for whatever reason, I like him better fuzzy.
