I’ve discovered (in 15 years of shaving) that no matter what I do I get razor burn. I get maybe 2 uses out of a new blade before it just becomes a nick-maker, because I have the wonderful combination of sensitive skin and a coarse beard.
My question is, has anyone found a good way to get rid of the irritation once razor burn has been achieved? I have to wait 1-2 days between shaves in a good week to avoid turning my throat into hamburger, so any ideas will be most welcome. I’ve tried after shave “balms” that don’t have much alcohol, skin lotions, and my wife’s moisturizer. Any other suggestions?
kilt-wearin’, shylock (sort of)—i have the same problem; after i shave, it takes at least 36 hours before i can shave again. luckily, my beard is fairly slow-growing (i think, actually, this is probably WHY i have to wait so long) and my job deosn’t require it. however, i have found that watered-down witch hazel does a decent job of reducing irritation. it doesn’t really go away, though–for that i’d recommend aspirin or something stronger (nudge, wink, etc.)
oh, and i’m a sensor-excel-usin’, edge-foamin’, up-shavin’ kinda dude. those mach 3s are just too damn big! i couldn’t shave the hairs just beneath my nostrils with the mach 3, so i went back to the Sensor (which, BTW, Gillette sent me as a FREE present for my 18th birthday… one of the best gifts i’ve ever received).
I normally use an electric razor anymore. My skin is pretty sensitive and tends to break out when I directly apply a blade to it. I will say the best shave you’ll get is from one of those big handheld razor blades, you know…the ones you see in the knife shops, and gangster movies. Be careful with ‘em tho’, they’re quite sharp at thirteen degrees.
