I thought one of my favorite film quotes was in that film, but no:ABC Movie of the week film: The Over The Hill Gang.
Chill Wills is in a poker game (and dealing the crooks extra aces) and when everyone shows their hand, he says, “I ain’t one to quibble over the rules, but seven aces in one deck… shoowee…that’s a LOT of aces.”
A mistake only in hindsight. And Chabert didn’t leave for movie roles. She left to concentrate on college. And at the time Chabert left Family Guy (the middle of the second season), the show was struggling in the ratings and was only barely renewed and eventually was canceled a year later.
I never had either the inclination or desire to watch an episode of this series (not even with Mr Shatner as the lead), and after reading its synopsis I can see I was absolutely right in not doing so!
(The only two US sitcoms I did start watching after Cheers! ended were Frasier and Big Bang Theory. All of the others I sampled were lame or just plain not funny at all, IMHO. )
I liked it. I was sad when it was canceled. Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan were also in it and are two very funny people and played two quite sympathetic characters as his son and daughter-in-law. One of my favorite scenes was when Shatner was in a karaoke bar and was asked if he wanted to sing. When it was suggested he sing “Rocket Man,” he quickly said, “Oh, no. Not tonight.”
I gotta agree. As much as I enjoy Mr. Limpet, I have to say The Ghost and Mr Chicken is pretty much the height of Don Knott’s film career. It’s as close to a perfect vehicle for a comedian as I’ve seen.
And that whole thing about 5 Emmys for the same role? The only other performer I know of who won 5 Emmys for the same role is Candace Bergen for Murphy Brown.
It should also be mentioned that he was also clashing big time with the production company that was putting his (and the three others in the rotation) out. He always claimed that he had been promised well written scripts and location shoots in Europe and the Middle East, but instead he ended up on the back lot doing pot boilers.
Since this has turned into the Bill Shatner thread. I thought it was interesting to see him playing Shirley Jones son on Hot in Cleveland. Shatner is 83 and Jones is 80.
Hey, I’ve laughed at Shatner jokes* many times, but really, what does he have to be embarrassed about?
He MAY be a jerk (many sources say so), he IS a ham. But the man has had a very long, very successful career, he’s been a huge star, and he’s made a ton of money. So, what does HE care if we laugh at his inflections or his over-emoting?
My favorite Shatner joke came in an old variety show sketch from decades ago. The sketch involved “Celebrity Math.” A few equations they taught:
Marie Osmond plus Crocodile Dundee = Olivia Newton-John
Laurence Olivier minus Laurence Olivier = William Shatner
