Good, I can use some right about now. How do we set this up? Would it be entirely legal, or would we run into one of those “cruelty” things? So, morning line, ten to one on **Lobohan?** Not quite fair. How about ten to one, and Lobo has to take two shots tequila and bongwater? Better?

Popularity doesn’t have anything to do with how right something is. Liberalism could be trod under by jack booted god police and the country could become a theocracy. That woudln’t mean that the conservative policies were correct, outlawing the teaching of evolution doesn’t mean it’s not true.

I’ll eat five tins of baked beans and a handfull of sleeping pills. Use a ouija board to interpret my farts and I’ll still score better than him. 😃

**BugMeNot2** :

Here’s a proposal, since you seem interested in betting. I think your predictions are too vague to form the basis of a bet. But if we make them more concrete, they might be viable. How about these?

#1 Support for gay marriage, legalized abortion, and premarital sex will decrease from current levels by a statistically significant margin by December 2012 within at least two major polls using the same questions over time.

#2 Public support for recycling and alternative energy will decrease by a statistically significant margin by December 2012 according to at least two major polls using the same questions over time.

#3: A republican who gets less than 20% crossover votes from self-identified Democrats will win the presidential election in 2012.

Would you be willing to place a bet on those? Say, perhaps, you will never post again if 0/3 come true and I’ll do the same if 3/3 are true?

Whoa. Have you been keeping up with the polls? Support for abortion is already tanking. Has been for years. And rates of teenage pregnancy are declining as the teen population becomes more religious and more prudish. What? I can’t be right! Wait…I am. Again, it’s the internet, have a look. I already have.

Hopefully these “alternative energy” sources will be paramount:

Oil Shale
Nuclear (fission)
Clean Coal
Oil sands
Methane hydrates
Fusion

Not the “alternative energy” sources trumpeted by the granola set.

See, this is the sort of thing that requires a cite, and not in the form of three cherry-picked data points over the past four years.

In what way are these alternative energy sources? Two of them don’t even exist in a remotely commercially viable way yet, and two others are simply far more expensive than the results they produce. What’s your problem with wind, geothermal, solar, etc.?

> The key is to figure out where that tipping point lies: how much carbon do we have to pump into the atmosphere and how much warmer does the climate need to be before get there? A team of researchers led by Elmar Kriegler of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany posed those questions to 43 of world’s top climatologists. Their answers, reported in an intriguing study published in the Mar. 16 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), basically amounted to, We don’t really know. The scientists agreed that there was a significant chance that tipping points would be crossed this century — or the next — especially if we fail to reduce carbon emissions and if global temperatures rise considerably over the coming decades. (Which, as we know, is likely to happen without a concerted global effort to cut CO2.) But the reality is that the climate system remains too complex, the future to difficult to predict, to peg exactly when we’ve passed the point of no return. We may not know the asteroid is about to hit us until it’s over our heads.
>
> That uncertainty has an obvious impact on the world’s response to global warming. Scientists can warn us repeatedly that adding billions of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere will eventually cause severe, even irreparable damage to the planet and to us — but they can’t tell us exactly when the catastrophe will occur. (Small pieces of it already have — the Arctic ice cap has already shrunk considerably, and dozens of frog species alone have gone extinct thanks to warming.) So climate change inevitably fades from the news and the public agenda, replaced by more urgent concerns: the recession, wars, terrorism. It’s perfectly understandable that many of us would take refuge in the uncertainty, and hope that we’ll somehow have the climate problem solved before we cross the tipping point. That would be a mistake. It may come later — or it may come sooner. We’ll never get an exact date. But the asteroid is on its way.

Perhaps, after the second Obama term. 🙂

Of course, I do think that the demographics mean that a Republican will have a hard time winning the presidency. But I have the hunch that if they win the presidency it will be with a candidate that is not so conservative. It is very likely that conservatives will call that candidate a RINO.

Uh, no, IIRC Freud’s death drive was a condition that humans can reach when trying to gain extreme pleasures, which can lead to death. What I do see is that currently humanity is telling the scientists to minimize their warnings, that is better to enjoy the current fossil fuel status even if it leads to disaster in regions of the earth.

It is not the environmentalists who are pushing for humanity to adopt a death instinct.

Stupid.

I see you’re having problems understanding my allusion. Let’s try again.

Worrying that we are somehow “destroying the environment” (what does that even MEAN?) and therefore we should

1. scale back industry to 1800s levels.
2. abandon mass transit and ideas like “suburbs” and “commuting”.
3. cripple our economy

could be seen as a manifestation of Freud’s idea of the “death instinct”.

Societal guilt? Liberals have it on a massive scale. We don’t belong on earth, we are somehow abnormal and abhorrent, we have “lost our connection with nature”, we are “destroying the planet”, we are evil, we are greedy, we are like viruses, we are like parasites, etc etc…

Scratch the surface of the environmental movement and you will find all the self-loathing of the worst flagellants from the middle ages.

We don’t deserve to live! We should stop having children! We should reduce the human population! Fetuses aren’t babies! Even if they are, we don’t want babies! Babies are killing the earth! Stop having children! Stop driving your car! Stop using light bulbs! We suck! We should die! The planet would be better off without us!

= Death Instinct.
