Shooter at Planned Parenthood clinic

UltraVires seems to be OK with calling him a Christian terrorist. Anybody should be, unless you either (a) abjure the association of any religious identity with the “terrorist” label; or, (b) want to afford Christianity a special immunity in this area.

Hahahaha! I love satire.

Are you reading or in online argument auto-pilot? He said:

But your response answers him anyways. It’s all about the gotchya.

He said ‘linguistically correct’, meaning that it’s not a Christian terrorist in the colloquial sense. He’s saying religiously-motivated Christian extremists who commit terrorist acts are not ‘Christian terrorists’; they’re just terrorists who happen to be Christian.

.

He told police, “No more baby parts”.

But yeah - probably doesn’t mean anything. Probably just a complete coincidence that he shot up a planned parenthood. He was probably just a random loonie. No reason to associate him with other anti-abortionists. Certainly no reason to connect him to all the many and sundry Christian anti-abortion groups. Why, it’s probable that he’s just a nut who didn’t know he was even standing in a baby part factory!

So Dear if killed people because he thought Planned Parenthood was killing live babies and selling them for parts - would the people who produced those lying videos be guilty of anything? Could the families of the victims win a civil judgement against the filmmakers?

No idea - serious question.

OK. We’ll see if that catches on.

When there was no evidence to link this guy to any group, then it didn’t make sense to link him to any group. As evidence DOES come in to link him to certain groups, then it does make sense. Not seeing what problem you are trying to identify, unless you expect people to be prescient.

It’s bullying the bullies, and that always feels good. It exposes hypocrisy and hopefully makes people stop and think a moment before spouting off about how we should do this or that to Muslims. Really? Make them wear ID tags? Round them up? Close their places of worship? Seriously? You know this is very basic growing up 101 stuff. Didn’t your mom or dad ever say “how would you like if someone did that to you?” Pretty basic stuff. Yet, it seems way too many people have forgotten the basic stuff, or maybe they were never taught it. I don’t know.

And yes, we should treat terrorists and terrorism the same regardless of the flavor. Exactly the same. Why on Earth wouldn’t we?

But it doesn’t work, so I’m going with the “it makes me feel good” explanation.

The problem is that he shot up a Planned Parenthood and we’re all supposed tippytoe around the sensibilities of the rightwing morons who’ve been threatening Planned Parenthood for months. We’re supposed to pretend that we don’t know why this guy shot up a planned parenthood, that maybe it was a coincidence, that maybe the lying anti-abortion crowd is completely innocent, even though they won’t stop talking about baby murderers.

He attacked a Planned Parenthood and we’re supposed to treat with kid gloves the many organizations - the many Christian organizations - who’ve been attacking Planned Parenthood and the brave people who work there, for years.

The problem is that insisting that we give the benefit of the doubt to the people who incite this violence is more important to some people than calling for an end to the violence.

Paint with a broad brush much? I’m Christian, and I don’t target Planned Parenthood. I quite support it. I don’t like abortion, but it should be legal, because that way fewer women’s lives are at risk.

Oh you’re obviously on the winning side as far as sloganeering goes.

I didn’t say “all Christians” target Planned Parenthood. I said Christians do, which is a fact, and they cite beliefs informed by their Christianity as reasons for what they’ve done. You don’t happen to be among this group, and that’s great, but please don’t minimize their existence or try to diminish the impact of their terrorist acts.

THIS x 100,000.

I am taking a break from my own favorite board, which is 95%-plus women, because they’re coming to all these assumptions about “the patriarchy” etc. and we don’t know if ANY of that is true.

Highly unlikely. It’s on the back burner compared with many other issues right now.

Don’t lecture me.

The reason this attack happened as well as the many attacks on abortion service providers over the years is because the Right Wing political machine in this country has been so successful in whipping up fear within the minds of its adherents that some of them snap and do something very stupid.

What is ridiculous is to expect those who continue to be victimized as a result of a warped ideology to continue to stand by silently and watch as right wing politicians, egged on by conservative media and evangelical ministries, demonize those they disagree with so harshly that it causes otherwise normal people to feel they have not only a right, but a responsibility direct from God to stop their perception of evil by any means and in necessary contravention of the law.

What these terrorists are doing is not good and is not righteous, and should be called what it is. Terroristic and murderous acts should be condemned in the strongest terms possible. It is beyond time to stop being reasonable about this. It is beyond time to stop acting as though we don’t know what is happening and by whom.

Dear’s “no more baby parts” comment is just another drop of evidence in an overflowing bucket of proof that there is a glaring problem with Christianity’s outsize influence on American political discourse. Let’s forget about how the Planned Parenthood videos were doctored; it doesn’t matter. The conservative media arm of the Republican party has successfully convinced its viewers that the videos are accurate, even ones they have not seen, and we now know that one of its followers Robert Lewis Dear, acted on that belief. Unfortunately, anyone with a brain knows this won’t be the last time.

A few weeks ago a prominent evangelical Christian minister called for the execution of Gays and lesbians at a public event attended by 3 Republican presidential candidates. Are you saying that was not Christian terrorism in addition to a call for physical violence? Do you believe some won’t be influenced or incited to take matters into their own hands?

It is time to speak out against this growing nonsense as strongly and vociferously as possible. I will admit to being as bad as the other side when progressives begin terrorizing and killing people for their ideology. I think I will choose not to hold my breath.

Considering that the majority of Planned Parenthood protestors and perpetrators are extremist self-identifying Christians, it would be ***really ***surprising if this case is anything but. That ain’t painting with a broad brush, it’s just being Captain Obvious.

 What is your argument, other than “sloganeering”?

Oh you know, being thoughtful about the topic. How should law enforcement look at it as a practical manner. I am rather surprised that I have to point out to you specifically that there’s more than political scoring points involved.

Nobody is denying they exist. No more so than the black supremacists who shot white cops. Get a grip.

Are you thinking of some specific incidents or is this all hypothetical “everybody does it” stuff?
