> There are those that say that our government should get out of the education business and let private enterprise take over completely because they would do a much better job. Are there countries out there that operate this way and if so, how are they faring? Could it work in this country in a way that benefits almost all of school age?

There are in fact those who say that private enterprise should take over just about anything because it can do a much better job. People who say that should generally be regarded as full of shit. Notice that they do not say that for things they like that the government does well, such as provide military protection, or build a national road network, or provide water to the population. Notice that they claim that the USPS is crap, when it is actually far less pricey than Fed Ex and UPS for everything except overnight delivery.

Schools are another such instance. Privatizing schools on an almost universal scale would result in savings in money to the government, but it would result in a truly lousy education for far more students than currently suffer from a lousy public education (of which there are many). Lowell High School in San Francisco is a public high school and the academic equal of any high school in the nation. (No, I didn’t go there.)
