Many of them don’t. But he was talking about undecided voters. They’re not the most moderate or the fairest; they’re the people who don’t follow politics closely and try to make up their minds right before the election. This is why it’s a good thing alcohol is legal.
Now we’re getting somewhere. No bigotry deserves respect, obviously, but you should be aware, and I know you are, that there are more than two opinions (Right and Wrong) about any social issue.
Your point regarding exclusion is valid. Let me tell you, in sincerity, I’ve had relationships, friendships of profound and lasting quality, with so many gay people … a lesbian woman who was my best friend for a couple of years (died of a brain tumor) a day doesn’t go by that I don’t grieve … several dear gay friends whom I lost to AIDS in the 80s when medical treatment wasn’t as effective as it is now, and social attitudes were far more cruel on average … and a smart and funny transexual buddy, who always saw the bright side and the good in everyone, even people that prejudged her based on her lifestyle choice.
I think I grasp the legal issues, that eventually the courts will force the changes we’ve discussed like they did desegregation. But, like I said, I have an interest in examining the views and feelings of all sides of this issue beyond, “The Goverment will MAKE you do what we want you to do.”
I think your last point there is actually an observation … does that mean it isn’t a point? I guess you’re the wrong one to ask.
I’m just bringing it up to say we shouldn’t put people on a pedestal just because they lack strong opinions. They could be grappling with the complexities of the issue or they could be lazy and not paying attention.
