Jeff Jacoby sure as hell is a tool in that machine. Hence my skepticism. A quick Google search of the alleged quote also indicates it’s quite the topic of pseudo-outrage among the wingnut brigades, and it’s always wise to be skeptical about anything that outrages the Freepers. ---

I do some more checking, but I can’t believe that the Boston Globe would allow someone to print a falsified quote, even as an editorial. And it’s hard for me to imagine what context could make the quote sound reasonable, unless it started with “We have to be careful not to say things like…”. ---

Googling turns up many sources for [Dean’s comment.](http://www.nydailynews.com/01-30-2005/news/wn_report/story/276020p-236422c.html) GOP officials are right to be thrilled at having that one at the head of the DNC, especially seeing him stick foot-in-mouth a few times already. Plenty of time for him to sink his own ship before the midterms… ---

FWIIW, the remark was quoted in the [New York Daily News](http://www.nydailynews.com/01-30-2005/news/wn_report/story/276020p-236422c.html) by one of their staff reporters (as opposed to a wire story or an opinion piece) the morning after the meeting. ---
