Does anyone remember a case that took place years ago in Maine? A woman was shot to death in her own back yard.
The hunter who shot her said he saw her white mittens and thought it was the white tail of a deer.
He was put on trial. A jury of his peers acquitted him, on the grounds that the woman should not have been wearing white mittens in her yard.
Honest mistake, I guess.
