Should I bring my laserdisc player to the dorms?

Dear Sirs: Should I bring[sic] my Kinetoscope to reform school?

I do have the Star Wars laserdisc where Han shoots first but I also have it on DVD. I just don’t have enough movies only on laserdisc to justify bringing it.

As someone who still owns several hundred laserdiscs, I can say that streaming Netflix on my laptop is quiet and blows them away in quality (with the possible exception of 5.1 sound - which may not be a big deal in a dorm)

reminder to self - sell laserdiscs…

no one has any respect for the proper way to watch movies anymore. streaming is no fun. actually owning the movie and handling the disc is part of the fun. and how can I watch movies when the internet goes down

iThink you can watch movies on an iPad…

They haven’t published movie on laserdisc since 2000. Your friends are not going to be impressed.

They might have to watch Gone With the Wind in American History or something.

Once again: If it’s something you value, do not take it into a dorm.

I had a friend who made a similar comment about Laserdiscs - but with regard to a real theatre filled with people experiencing the art of film as a shared experience.

I am now agnostic regarding the venue and technology - both of which evolve.

Although it’s too late now, I voted “maybe” for the reasons BigT stated. Going to university/college can be a really stressful (while also exciting) time. Having something that means a lot to you can help ease you into the situation.

When I was in high school I played guitar (badly, but I enjoyed it). I left it at home when I went to uni because it was too much of a fuss to take (I had to fly, and change planes twice enroute). That was a mistake. I’m sure it would have made my transition easier if I had been able to play it in the evenings. When I returned for second term I made sure I had it with me.

I don’t see the laserdisc as being player as being a target for thieves (except stupid ones). They want to steal stuff that will get them money. What’s the market for old laserdisc players?

Laser discs are to DVDs as “Beta” was to VHS. Leave it at home.

And no offense, but if having a laser disc player is your identity, you need a new hobby.

Unless you have a large laserdisc porn collection, leave your player at home.

Don’t be disappointed about not bringing it. Your time machine can easily rectify the situation.

Good point. He might be very popular after all.
