I am disappointed to find out that there is no built-in wifi support. I would have to purchase the adapter, because I loathe the idea of running ethernet cable into the living room.
As it stand right now, I’m leaning heavily towards getting the Xbox. If I do go this route, should I wait until August to buy the 60GB HDD? How are the 20GB ones working out for everyone?
I believe 20GB is more than enough, unless you are ripping your entire CD collection to the 360. I have mine full of multiplayer maps for Halo 3, FEAR, Gears Of War and the like and I barely have it at 2 GB full.
It’s alright. I haven’t filled it yet, but that’s because I delete any demo I haven’t played in a while. It’s only a few weeks away, I’d wait for the 60.
The 20 and 60s actually had the PS2 hardware in them (no emulation, it was the Emotion Engine on a discreet chip). They stopped making like them like that to save cost. The 80 GBs had software emulation, but it was problematic hence stopped those, too.
There is rumor that they are going to announce PS2 game downloads at E3…the library may be limited to only what they think they can sell in volume, and they’re rumored to be ports, not emulated versions, so would run on any PS3.
As for visual quality for cross platform games, its hit or miss, depending on the primary platform the game was targeted on - usually they will develop on one and port to another, with the ported version being the lesser version. This was more commonly the PS3 due to the 360s time on the market, but most of the reviews I’ve read recently have them even, or with a slight edge to the PS3 now as the developers have better SDKs and knowledge of the architecture, which is very different from what either console had in the prior generation. But even that is subjective and can flux between games.
The PS3 has greater theoretical processing power and higher memory bandwidth, but less overall memory and a CPU architecture that is harder to fully take advantage of. Back to the OP…make your decision based on the games you want to play, but be prepared to be frustrated as either console is going to have some nice exclusives that you wont have.
I have a 20 Gig HD and download lots of songs for Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I have under 6 gigs of free space now and two or three decent sized demos can all but finish that off. I really want a bigger HD.
Heh. Well that ends this debate. Sweetie, you’re getting a PS3. It’s bad enough being a WoW widow.
(Hehe…actually, I’ve been on the side of the Xbox since I found out about the Netflix arrangement. That, and I think it will look better next to my pretty little Wii.)
I believe there may be a Blu-Ray expansion coming out for the 360. Minimally, I expect Blu-Ray players to get a lot cheaper. Not worth buying a PS3 for it if you can wait till Christmas.
X-Box Live’s silver account, the free one, lets you shop online, download, and apparently lets you play multiplayer on weekends. I keep meaning to try that last bit.
Mario Kart Wii also says hello from the Wii in the living room. I really should fire that up some time.
…But that’d mean I have to make time for it amongst GTAIV, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Civilization, and MLB 2K8.
Maybe I’ll play the girlfriend tonight.
I can’t understand why Sony gave up on supporting the old PS2 games. it’s crazy. I hope they don’t go the downloadable route, and find a way to make it work with a new version of the console. Can the Xbox play the old version of games?
Instead of getting a cheaper system by removing the PS2 stuff. I would have preferred they removed wifi, or wireless controllers. Kind of like the cheaper Xboxes.
That said. All in all, the sytems are so close in quality I don’t think you could possibly go wrong either way. Personally. I have used both and like the PS3 more. It’s the controllers for me - I just like the feel of the Sony ones. I also like the fact you can interact so easily with the PSP, and just the way that screen is setup where you can choose what to run.
I don’t own either. But, if I see one of those packages with the dualshock controllers and 80 gig version I would probably pick it up. The graphics and play on both systems are so close I can’t see any choice being wrong. I don’t think either system will go the way of the Dreamcast.
