sydney’s a pretty expensive place to live (for australian standards anyway). however i doubt it’d be anywhere near as expensive as san francisco. i love sydney (live 2 hours drive from it) and it’s a really good city. ya, we can’t abide with you whingeing poms, but we don’t mean it
i’m not too sure about sydney prices… but in terms of the current exhange rate you’ll be loaded. 1 pound buys about 3 australian dollars, so you’d be looking pretty good in that respect. if you need a price comparism, $2 will buy you a 600mL coke, $5 a big mac meal and $20-$30 will buy you a cd. bars charge $3-6 for drinks. (the important things in life).
gex gex, it looks like Sidney’s not too diffenent from the States, cost-wise.
With an exchange rate of 3 Dollars Australian to one Pound English, and CD costs at AUD20 - AUD30, then I’d make that about an average of a little over 8 Puonds English per disk. At today’s exchange rate, that means you’re paying a little over USD12 per disk, with a range of roughly USD10, to USD15. That’s pretty close to here in the States, at least for music. Your soda prices are a little high, but not by much, and your Big Mac meals are on the cheap side.
Please accept my apologies for my San Franciso bashing. My only excuse is, I didn’t just leave my heart there; first it was ripped from my chest and trod under feminine heels.
In fact, I loved Frisco as much as anyone.
So, to the person who started this thread, I’d like to say that I hope I didn’t turn you off to the idea. Frisco (ok, already! San Francisco!) is really quite a beautiful place; sure it has its problems, but name me a place that doesn’t… the moon, maybe?
Any chance you could get a working visa for either country? That might help with the living expenses.
Are you responsible for your own airfare, or is your university paying? (Go for Sydney if they are – flights from the UK to the US are cheaper, so you may as well wait and visit on your own.)
I’d probably go for Sydney anyway, but then, I’m American so San Francisco doesn’t sound all that exciting. Definitely go somewhere, though – studying abroad is an unforgettable experience, and going somewhere on vacation can’t compare with actually living there.
