# Should I go see the Rolling Stones?

Anyone been to the shows on this tour? Right now, I’m strongly considering it based on YouTube clips as well as the Stones updates on their Facebook page.

Do you have a time machine? If not, then no.
I saw the stones a few times back in the seventies. But I can’t imagine bothering to do so these days when a ticket costs as much as a decent stereo. I’d rather spend it seeing a few dozen other shows that, while not as much spectacle, stand a much better chance of being a good show.

We strongly considered it, but the price for good seats vs. other things we could do with the money weighed in favor of not going. **Suburban Plankton** has seen them already, I like them, but I’m not a huge fan, and the Kiddo was “meh” about the idea. In the Kiddo’s defense, he loved Bob Seger, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, he’s just not a Stones fan. We’re spending less money for better seats to see Black Sabbath (with Ozzy) this summer instead.

In L.A., I have been hearing $300 minimum. No one is worth that much.
After checking the interwebs, prices for the Staples Center gig are from 175 to 2085 dollars per seat.
The 175 dollar seat may or may not be in the same zip code as the band.

I saw them something like 10 years ago. Even then it seemed amazing that Mick could prance so well. I got to see it free, so it was well worth it. I’m certainly not even thinking about paying tons of money for this tour. The review I read said that everyone besides Mick were a bit subdued. But, if one were a bigger fan than I am and have never seen them before, it might be worth it.

For that kind of money, you could hire a Stones tribute band and give them the set list you want to hear and have a concert in your back yard. Seriously, it’s not like the Stones are astonishing musicians playing particularly difficult music. Keith himself said that all you need to play his guitar parts is “six strings, two fingers and one asshole.” It is iconic rock and roll, granted, but it’s really basic. King Crimson they ain’t.

And if it was King Crimson you wanted, you could probably assemble a decent cover band for that price from the local music school. Even prog rock is rarely all that. (Ok, my experience here may be skewed by having a good music school nearby. YMMV)
If you had wanted to see a nice stage show featuring Keith, Mick and Ron, then you wouldn’t be disappointed. But when you actually see the Rolling Stones these days, it’s largely a Stones cover band with the current members out front for decoration. I’ve seen more than one recent clip where Keith stops playing for one reason or another, and there’s someone churning away on his part for him. It’s not my glass of beer, but some people are obviously looking for different things out of their performers than I am.
