I propose we impeach everyone in the administration except Bush. Let the Cheese stand alone.
In the (unlikely) case of a Democratic congressional revolution, I think that’s just what we’ll be seeing. Clinton (or more accurate, the Congress that impeached him), has poisoned impeachment for a couple more administrations, at least.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t lock up his co-conspitrators and poison his name in the history books.
Darn! You guys keep beating me to the good retorts.
They’re gutless and stupid but they’re not retarded. They’ll have subpoena power and an unpopular President who has ALL KINDS of dirt clinging to him. An Abramov investigation with teeth and subpoena power would probably add a few more seats to the Dem side eventually. Might even get to Der Prez. Then there’s Halliburton deals to investigate, the Plame affair … oh, the Dems will investigate.
That’s why I’m sure the Pubs will cheat. Look for some very surprising electoral results in 2006. I would love to be proved wrong here. But I’m not all that worried …
As to the OP, it would be more effective to investigate, vilify and disgrace the Chimp in Cheif than to impeach him, which has that nasty partisan thing going for it thanks to the Blowjob Impeachment.
The government is so sluggish now in comparison to 1974 and the removal of Nixon. The offenses, however, are far worse.
I think that Bush could be impeached on the NSA wiretapping violations alone. The thought of having Cheney as President of the United States would give the Democrats a good reason not to impeach him, however.
Nixon would have been impeached and removed from office if he had not resigned. Bush’s conduct, in my opinion, has been far more damning. Clinton was impeached – though not removed from office. He was guilty of not upholding one of our laws. But that particular law was not as damaging to our nation as a whole as has been the misconduct of Bush.
I’ve lived under twelve Presidents. This one is the worst by far.
It is premature to speak of impeachment. I have a gut feeling that Bush has so many skeletons in his closet that he makes the “Paths of the Dead” on Lord of the Rings look like a small family cemetary. However, this gut feeling is not the smoking gun proof neccesary to sway the general public into supporting impeachment. We may never find it, but we might be able to find enough embarresing stuff that it will render Bush a lame duck for the rest of his term.
What we must strive to achieve, what is absolutely vital, is to have at least a one vote majority in the House of Representatives. That’s ALL we need. Then we will have control of the committees, and the committees will have subpeona power.
I have no illusions that the dems will be able to push any major liberal agenda if we win. All we’ll be able to do is stop some of Bush’s more egregious bullshit from passing through. But after years of seeing the Republicans get everything they want, that’s good enough for me.
I think the Clinton years have made us impeach-happy. But I would hope the Dems, if they regain a majority, will focus on getting this country back on track and begin rebuilding our tarnished image around the world. An impeachment, as we saw with Clinton, is a huge consumer of time and resources. And what did it accomplish? It shamed Bill, I guess. He would say no. But it seemed like a colossal waste of time when the Pubs could have moved forward an actual agenda, with their majority status.
Maybe impeaching Bush *is * a step towards rebuilding our image. Showing the world that we are a democracy and when our leaders run afoul of our values we hold them accountable. It may take some time, and we may kill thousands of your people before we realize how wrong we were, but we will get around to it. But I would love for thw world to see a resounding rejection of Bushco policies. Maybe then they will realize we are not all imperialist loons.
As long as we maintain the present system of financing politics, nothing will change. The corps still hold the big cards. The incumbants still want to maintain the system to their advantage. The horrible lelgislation will likely stand.
The dems will sit down and do a polilitical calculus and determine if it is to their political advantage. to go after President Cheney and vp Bush. It wont be driven by principle.
That’s what the rest of the world were expecting to see at the last election. That boat has sailed.
Yeah, I’m afraid so.
Naaah. Not to invoke Godwin, but Germany recovered its rep. Japan too. It is just going to take time, and effort. And hopefully not our country in smoking ruins.
Agreed.
The trouble is that between Chile, Vietnam, supporting Saddam, Iran-Contra, Grenada etc etc and now GW2 it is the times the USA is not behaving like a murderous bully that look like the exception.
When you re-elect clowns like Reagan and Bush, piss on Kyoto, declare war on verbs and apparently consider homosexuals and stem cells the biggest threat to humanity the rest of the world just shakes its collective head.
Then I have to put on a Dylan or a Springsteen album or read some Twain to remind myself of the silent, ineffectual great America.
Right. The DEMs need to Impeach (and the Senate to not convict) to teach Congress that they need to come up with a real definition of “high crimes and misdemeanors”. It appears to me that the FF meant “high crimes” which are crimes punishable by death.
Cite? Clinton was never found guilty of any crime. He did lie, sure. He prevaricated under oath, also, and was even warned by the Judge. Whether or not that Prevarication rose to the level of convictable Perjury has never been shown- after all if it had been, the Witch-hunter General would have gone for it. Instead, Clinton was never even *charged * with any crime.
You need a serious reality check. The Euro’s have been rampaging through the world for centuries now, and THEY have managed to rehabilitate themselves in the eyes of The World™ (well, THEY think they have). If they can do it, surely we can do it too. The acts you mention above look like a flower power convention compared to some of the shit they did in the past. As to ‘murderous bully’ image…its too laugh.
The image of the ‘rest of the world’ shaking its collective heads in hipocrital outrage literally makes coke snort out of my nose in derision. What universe do you live in that electing Reagan and Bush equates to putting guys like Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot or Lil’ Kimmy in charge of a natin? That can equate considering homosexuals and stem cells bad with, I don’t know, mass murder on an industrial scale say, like in German, Russia, South East Asia, Africa, etc etc?
Yeah, ‘the rest of the world’ sure has a lot to shake its collective heads over bad, BAD! America re-electing Bush…
Impeachment of Bush is a wet dream of the loony left. Its not going to happen. It would also be incredibly stupid, even supposing the Dems DO manage to win enough of a majority to make it practical…something thats not exactly a sure thing even at this point. What the Dems SHOULD do, assuming they win, is to grow some backbone and start fighting…block Bush from being able to do ANYTHING that is objectionable, make him and the administration accountable for whatever they are doing, and generally make their life hell for the rest of Bush’s term, become the party of fiscal responsiblity vacated by the 'Pubs…but do so in a way that doesn’t look petty and vindictive…i.e. set themselves up to maybe start winning back voters to their cause by being the responsible party. I have scant hopes the Dems WILL do these things, mind, but I HOPE they do.

The sins of Euros or others in the past are no excuse for our imperialist bullying of the 21st century (and beyond). All the things you say are valid points, but they really have nothing to do with the fact that our behavior and abuse of power has been embarassing.
I was similarly unaware of how much of the rest of the world viewed us until I started travelling extensively in Central America. Sit with a man whose entire family disappeared one night during the revolution in El Salvador. They can tell you about the “benevolent” Americans.
Hell, even Costa Ricans have tales to tell. We used them when we needed a sure friend during the revolutions in Central America. Now that we no longer need them, we are crushing them economically.
A friend of mine was a missionary in Chile. Check into Pinochet and how we supported him, and how he treated his people.
Sure, not to invoke Godwin again, but we are no Hitler (yet). But just because we do not hold the dubious distinction of being 1st on the evil hit parade does not erase our culpability.
We are murderous bullies, like it or not.
First, in places like Europe, that’s in the past, what America is doing is happening now - and if you bring up the past, we virtually wiped out a continent. Second, most of those people were not elected - twice; their people did not embrace their evil, like America has embraced Bush’s evil. As for the people who are being hypocritical - however evil they are, that makes America no better.
Of course; Americans are either too sheeplike, too stupid or too evil to do anything about Bush and his friends. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been re-elected.
Clinton was, in fact, impeached. He was later acquitted by the Senate, but note that impeachment and removal are two different things.
