Its not like the Vietnamese or Koreans had permissive attitudes towards their daughters being prostitutes but it was war. To this day there is a special stigma associated with Vietnamese and Korean women who marry outside their race because of this (moreso in Korea than in America).
That’s actually not uncommon in Thailand. Not all the sex tourists here are male.
Forgot to add: I know one brothel madame in particular who says she gets lady customers and always keeps up on which girls can service them.
To the OP: Why not just recruit more women into the military, start sending women into the battlefield, and encourage the use of condoms? While prostitution isn’t necessary to begin with (people can always wank themselves off), it certainly becomes far less necessary when you can date.
This has been tried in the real world. The problem is that in real world prostitution:
- Roughly 1/3rd of all prostitutes are minors
- Roughly 50-70% are drug addicts.
- Roughly 50-70% have a pimp – they are not free workers and they don’t work in a nice brothel.
Probably 80% of prostitutes cannot switch over to being legal (i.e. regulated) prostitutes. And unlike regulated, brothel prostitutes they are cheaper by a significant factor, you are often allowed to not use a condom, and depending on the pimp (and your interests) you can be more rough with her as well.
The end result of legalized/regulated prostitution is that more people start visiting prostitutes, presumably since the social stigma is removed, but the number of clean brothels stays about the same. The establishments which become legal brothels are just the nice, clean brothels that used to be illegal. But demand seems to lean in favor of the unregulated prostitution which, in Europe, has lead to the trafficking of women from Eastern Europe and in Australia, from the Phillipines, so that now illegal immigrants are added to the list of prostitutes who cannot work in a clean, regulated establishment. But if they didn’t do that, they wouldn’t be able to meet the demand.
Illegal, unregulated prostitution seems to usually double or triple after prostitution is legalized. And of course the women who already worked in clean brothels are largely unaffected. Overall, it only seems to be a negative.
I am in the UAE with the US Navy right now. This place is overflowing with prostitutes. Search craigslist rest of world/ middle east/ UAE / Services/ Therapeutic for just some of the ads. There are other websites as well as very well known hotels that have bars full of hookers from Russia, Romania, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Iran, Philipines, Thailand and others. The hypocrisy of this place is sickening. There are so many double standards and inequities here I am eager to return home.
The military doesn’t need this hypothetical brothel arm. Every single Navy woman with us is having sex with a male also within the unit. All of them, officer and enlisted, consensually, and legally. These are not rumors, a female I know is passing this information, along with the guys bragging or others seeing them together. Between an integrated military, local sex workers and the ease of locating consensual civilian partners in most places we go, there is no need for a military brothel.
This isn’t my first rodeo. Nookie is not difficult to get when deployed.

Well, MArio Vargas Llosa has a book just for this exact situation, “Captain Pantoja and the Special Service”(Pantaleón y las Visitadoras - in Spanish), where this captain tries to boost morale by providing a well-reugualtes prostitution service to his troop. The 2000 film is a good version.

To go back to the O.P. I think that its an excellent idea but it will never happen.

Personally I believe it should be legalised outside of the military and government regulated.
As said before it could be taxed, STDs prevented from spreading, safety for both the workers and their customers, elimination of pimps and forced drug addiction to entice the women into the job(or men ).
It would also help prevent sexual frustration with its attendant mental problems for those people who find it impossible to pick up members of the opposite sex and stop ordinary women who live in the “wrong” areas being pestered by kerb crawlers .
For those in marriages to those with low sex drives or inhibitions they could get sexual relief without having to take on marriage threatening affairs; that start off for sex but end up with emotional attachment.
And lastly it would IMO lower (but not eliminate) the incidence of sexual assaults and rape.
But I can’t really see it happening, too much emotion involved.

Yeah. I’m thinking that if the candidates for prostitution (it sounds funny to say that) have to pass Army evaluations, that’s going to reduce the number of candidates significantly. A lot of candidates are going to have nontrivial criminal records, drug dependencies, various medical issues (other than STD’s), and otherwise aren’t “Army Material”.
Or, we could have a program to recruit girls just out of high school or in college before they have been “damaged” by life as a garden-variety prostitute. That would cause such an uproar in the US from both liberal and conservative circles that whoever proposed it would lose all respect.

They wouldn’t have to, it would be hopefully not only self funding but make a profit making a small reduction in the military budget.
It may already exist to a limited extent. I have heard a few second hand accounts of young female military personnel who had a nice side business while on deployment.
