Should the US lower its immigration numbers?

That sounds a little backwards. Immigrants will stop coming when they no longer want too - when the US is no longer an attractive country to immigrate to.

Immigrants are not going to consider whether the US needs them or not before they decide to stop coming.

The U.S. will no longer need immigrants when it’s no longer an attractive country to immigrate to.

well that should certainly be our goal

I don’t know exactly which goal you’re rolling your eyes about, but my assertion is that it’s all of a piece. In order to remain economically competitive, the U.S. must accept immigrants, in a much more open way than we do now. The only point at which we won’t “need” immigrants is the point at which our country is civilly and economically stalled. Immigration will never harm the United States. But if it gets to the point that immigrants no longer want to come here, that means we’ve tanked.

It already has harmed the US. Refer to the npr hosted article I posted above. California is badly damaged.

So, after we reach a point that we no longer need immigrants, it still wouldn’t benefit poorer people from screwed up countries to come to the U.S.?

California is badly damaged not because of immigrants but because its people have created an ungovernable system that prohibits the legislature from raising taxes while at the same time increasing expenditures. Immigrants have done California good. It’s the voters that have failed California.

Nope. The U.S. depends upon immigration for its future success. Either we will need immigrants and there will be no need to stop them from coming or we will be a basket case and immigrants won’t want to come anyway.

What?! Things would be better in California if taxes were higher?

You didn’t answer my question, actually. The “Nope” start off fine, but the rest doesn’t address the question I raised.

Did you read about the academic results and the impact this will have on California’s future productivity?

You still haven’t addressed the point that the US has a social welfare system and that taxes pay for education and health. If you have unrestricted immigration that is simply unsustainable.

Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but it seems to me that acsenray’s only method of controlling immigration is to lower the standard of living in our country to where it’s no longer attractive for those born in less fortunate locales.

That was what evoked my

That’s a good way to look at it. Maybe it’ll cause her to rethink her position.

That’s true, under his method immigration will just naturally stop once the standard of living reaches that of your average third world country.

No, because it is immigration that maintains our standard of living. If you want to destroy us, put the squeeze on immigration. Conversely, if controlling immigration is all you care about, then go ahead and destroy the country, because that will hectic outcome anyway.

Do you think you could provide some evidence for this? Or at least, address my comments above? At the moment you might as well be telling us it is the alignment of the stars that maintains our standard of living.

Let’s recap. Here is your earlier assertion:

So, you state:

  1. we must accept immigrants to remain competitive; actually, not only that, but
  2. we must accept them in a much more open way than we do now

Now, I think most of us wold allow for A being true, though it would be nice to put some of the millions of citizens that are unemployed to work instead of giving those jobs to immigrants. But leaving that aside for now, what evidence do you have that we must accept them in a more open way then we do currently?

Also, what do you mean by “civilly” stalled?

So immigration has had no part in the increase in the number of people in this country dependent upon welfare? Has not had any part in the inflation of the number of people living below the poverty line? Has not had any part in the increase in crime and gang activity?

Really?

Again,

One thing lost on ascenray and those who share her opinion is the degree to which large numbers of immigrants with low skills hurt the poor/poorly educated in this country. Not only do illegals suppress wages for low-skilled hobs, but even legal immigrants competing for those jobs do, in that they increase the supply of labor. The black community has been quite hard in this regard, on both counts.

Exactly how does adding millions and millions of poor, unskilled, uneducated, illiterate immigrants from third world countries maintain our standard of living?
