Should there be a 'waiting period' before posting?

Actually, you should run tattle to the teacher. Report the post, rather than go Na Na Na.

I’ve seen a couple of good ones, but the vast majority of remarks are just
“I wonder how zombies feel about…” or just “BRAAIIINNSSS!” Lame-o city.

I’m just looking for a polite way to discourage that.

No, not responding…originating.

Unless they have to start a thread to respond to a column, as is often the case.

So I’m not the only one put off by the seeming acceptance of sexism here by many of the mods. Glad to know it. I’m not for complete censorship of these sexist comments. I just wish that a mod or two would tell the juveniles who post them that they are tacky. (I’m sure the mods could find a better word for it.)

If you are a woman and don’t find such comments offensive, then goody for you.

Cleverness is subjective. Everyone who posts those “jokes” thinks they are being clever. Unfortunately, most objective people would agree that 99.99999% are just lame. However, although I don’t think they are necessary (or even appropriate), there certainly shouldn’t be a (general) rule against them.

And what percentage of threads in Comments on Cecil’s Columns/Staff Reports are originated by newbies?

It’s not unusual.

This is the first place I have ever seen old threads referred to as zombie threads.

I don’t mind them when they come up, if the subject interests me I will read it, if one does not like them, don’t read them. Seems simple really.

If I search for something in particular and it brings up an old thread, I will read it for the information I was hoping to find, but will not resurrect it from the dead.

I see no harm in “zombie” threads.

This is a large board, with lots of postings going on all the time; we cannot see everything 100% all the time – we get most things and certainly all problems, I would think.

The Straight Dope community is a large-ranging greatly diverse one and there’s going to be people who think differently from one another. Sometimes vastly so. It’s not the job of the moderators to be Thought Police nor is it our responsibility to make sure people don’t get their delicate sensibilities offended.

That’s not to say that anything goes – there are some things that are beyond what is acceptable behavior in this society and we do (reasonably so) rule on these issues. But know and understand that there is a wide spectrum of belief and opinion and not everyone shares the same point of view – and that is okay.

If a thread offends you and is in violation of rules, report it.

If a thread offends you and is not in violation of rules, ignore it.

Don’t read them then.

Perhaps a better alternative is don’t make them. They serve no purpose, including providing humor. Lots of supposedly “humorous” posts get made here and fall flat, but zombie jokes aren’t necessary and don’t help the situation at all. And as I said, one man’s “clever” is another man’s stinker.

(And in case I wasn’t clear earlier, I don’t mind them, but just think they are stupid.)

I find it easier to control my own actions than those of others. Especially anonymous people on a Message Board.

I’m I the only person who quite likes to see old threads getting resurrected?

No you are not. They are often more interesting than any of the new threads that are around.

I’m a guy and I agree with you. The casual sexism is one of the more bizarre things about this board and it has made me bolt for the Log Out button more than once. It’s disappointing how many “intelligent” people have that crap bouncing around in their heads.

Zombie threads…zombie jokes … BFD! Get over yourselves.

I think there should be a waiting period before threads get closed.

In other words, not like this one.
