I found out one of my child’s teachers was comparing a Shakespeare play to a Star Trek episode! Will they just give ANYONE a teching certificate these days? I demanded he be fired immediately. ---

My mother is a full-fledged Trekkie…goes to conventions, even went on the “Star Trek Cruise” around Central and South America, and as a result has become good pen pals with George Takei (sp?). Her Christmas stocking looks like a Federation uniform, her office is decorated with various posters of Kirk, Spock, Pickard, the Enterprise, etc., and she even has gold Enterprise earrings! Not to mention her Halloween costume, the Christmas ornaments, coffee cups, T-shirts, bumper stickers… Anyway, I think it’s awesome. I tell everyone “Some parents raise their kids Christian, some raise their kids Mormon…my mother raised me Trekkie.” She’s a very unique individual who has always done her own thing and had fun with it, met lots of cool famous folk, and always impressed all my friends and boyfriends with her knowledge of Star Trek history for the last howevermanyyears…for example, recently my husband asked me to call her to explain whether Kahn was human or alien and what his beef with Kirk was, etc. etc. And I can’t even begin to describe how much fun we had with her talking Shuttlecraft Christmas ornament. “Shuttlecraft to Enterprise…Spock here. Happy Holidays. Live long, and prosper.” Hee. ---

As a long time Trekkie - I did a university course last year on the philosophy of Star Trek. So education isn’t a problem! You even get course credits for it! Not all Trekkies dress up in uniforms etc - we just like the show! ---

Legomancer, be careful. The mods on this board are pro-Trek Nazis. People who are anti-Trek get banned. They let people make fun of “literary SF” all they want here, but the moment you start questioning Trekkies, they plaster you with the Trekaphobe label and start issuing warnings. ---

Now, here’s what I don’t get-- the Trekkie lifestyle thing. I had some friends in college come out as Trekkie, and while they didn’t change a LOT on like a one-on-one level, all of a sudden they were doing all this stereotypical Trekkie stuff, like speaking in a Klingon lisp, and wearing those clothes, and going out to Trekkie conventions all night, their politcal bumperstickers and “Star Fleet Academy” flags and crap, listening to Filk music and that kind of thing-- just really acting not like themselves anymore but like flaming Trekkies. . . Trekkies don’t want to be stereotyped, so why do all the young Trekkies goes through this phase? Is it a kind of community thing? I mean, that kind of public political and style thing is what really hurts their image in the eyes of the public, because no one even notices the older, stable Trekkie relationships-- the ones that just sort of meet in the science fiction bookstores or at work and stuff. ---

That’s the thing, capybara, it’s bad enough that they have this deviant lifestyle, but they feel like they have to just rub it in your face. I’ve tried to accept Trekkie co-workers and friends of friends, but to them, everything is Trek. That’s all they want to talk about. And they feel like they have to provide the Trek angle on every discussion. We’ll be talking about cookie recipes or something and all of a sudden I have to find out what kind of cookies Trekkies like, as if I care. I had a Trekkie co-worker who, every Monday, would have to talk about his weekend, and it was always filled with the most disgusting Trekkie stuff - conventions, fan club meetings, MARATHONS! I was glad when they finally fired him. (Which is another thing. Now they want all kinds of special rights, like the right to not be fired for something that doesn’t affect their work at all, the right to not be dragged to death behind a truck, the right to not be beaten on the streets, and so forth. What nerve!) And have you ever seen female Star Trek fans? Let me tell you, they don’t look like the ones in the magazines! ---

I agree with Legomancer. If they just weren’t soooo “flamboyant” you wouldn’t really know, would you? I mean, it’s OK if they keep their private life private, but flamboyantly exposing themselves as trekkies and falling into the stereoritype is just wrong. Imagine if the trekkies in the military just started flaunting around in klingon regalia or pointy ears or something? Who would take our armed forces seriously? Don’t ask, DON’T TELL… That’s what I say. ---
