If Trump gets the Nobel, the world will roll its eyes for a day or two, and then move on to more important matters.
Alas, since his friend Jeff died, he doesn’t have access to mouths that fit his mushroom.
In general, Trump should never get credit for anything.
A lot depends on how you define whether an agreement holds. Even if Hamas disappears in its present form and some future Israeli government adopts a more conciliatory approach to Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank, would that hold in the next cycle of resistance and repression?
Anyone who can come up with a viable permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and is capable of implementing it in our lifetime, deserves far more than a mere Nobel Prize. The God-Empirehood of Mankind, maybe.
He is not going to get that. But in a half year, when they are wheeling Trump around in a wheel chair, JD and pals manage a deal for Trump to resign. They will claim he accomplished all he set out to do. JD will make sure it all lasts. They will have to print the Trump dollar first. Then Trump resigns, JD takes over and introduces the Trump dollar, also the semiquincentennial dollar, for all the great accomplishments of Trump. Then JD gives him the semiquincentennial presidential medal of honor. No other president will get that. Even the Nobel Peace Prize will be nothing compared to that. Then JD announces the construction of the Trump Shrine To Making America Great Again on the Centennial Mall.
Regarding this and, frankly, everything else involving the US and the international community, I suspect Trump has no awareness - it’s all being orchestrated by the manipulators he’s placed in positions of influence. Sometimes I have to wonder if Stephen Miller is the actual president. I doubt Trump should get credit for getting dressed every morning. But maybe I’m not being fair to him.
If he really get’s something worthy of the Nobel price he should get it, independently of any despicable actions he has committed.
Will he get something worthy of the Nobel price? I very very much doubt it.
Will they also be awarding Trump the Donald J. Trump Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence?
Tacitus may or may not disagree, depending on how literally you take his famous quote.
iDJTAFOAITFOE? Yes, I would like to hear him say it aloud while accepting it.
There will be no peace deal in Gaza until the Israeli government is satisfied that it has exterminated enough Palestinians that they can take total ownership and control of Gaza unopposed.
Anything that looks like a pending peace deal is just more stalling while they murder more civilians.
Me thinks that there has to be a Gaza peace deal, and it needs to hold for at least months before getting into hypotheticals about Trump getting credit. Waaaaaaaay to premature at this point.
Moderating:
This is a threadshit: you aren’t required to agree with the premise, but the OP is explicitly about what credit if any Trump should get the event of an actual Gaza Peace deal. Granted a lot of people are making the point that assigning credit is very premature, but they mostly return to the actual OP’s point. Given how high the emotions are on the subject, and your tenure as a poster, I’m not issuing a warning, but remind all in the thread to stay on topic. Let’s not refight the conflict in yet another thread, when there are so very many other, more appropriate threads to do so.
The news tonight looks good.
Did Trump do the work of diplomats? No.
What he did was supplement diplomacy with threats against Hamas (“complete obliteration”). If you think that was helpful, then Trump gets credit.
Steve Witkoff told Netanyahu that there would be “all hell to pay” if Israel didn’t fall in line with the dealmaking. If you think that was helpful AND that Trump should get credit for what his staff does, Trump gets credit there.
If I was a Democratic Party politician trying to peel off swing voters, and the proposed prisoner swap and cease fire goes forward, it would be hard not to give Trump credit – especially if I had a history of praising Biden for what was really work of his staff.
Consider this from CBS News:
I’ve posted elsewhere that some of these wars are ongoing despite a White House peace agreement photo-op.
If Trump gets lucky on Israel-Hamas with threats, given how much I care about that conflict, good. But I doubt it is generally helpful.
There’s no reason to think it made a difference. Trump isn’t in charge of Israel, the Israeli government is, and they’ve already made their genocidal intentions obvious. What can Trump do, genocide them twice?
Heck, that’s always been the fundamental issue with making Palestine into an American political issue. People in the US talk like the US President is the King of Israel and could just fix the situation at will, when in reality it isn’t his country at all. Trump is, ultimately an outsider to the entire situation who has only a very limited ability to affect it one way or another.
Of course, he absolutely WILL take credit, and if it actually happens and holds for more that 24 hours, I see him storming the Nobel Committee with demands that he get the Peace Prize. Ugh. It will be an even more embarrassing spectacle than usual.
You will an explosion when the Nobel Peace prize is announced and it is not Trump. That’s why he wanted the deal today.
You’re probably right; but does anyone seriously think that the Nobel committee is going to wait till the last possible moment to make the decision? (Besides Trump?)
They clearly have already decided.
The Trump handlers have a busy morning. Ketchup on the wall. But they could tell him he can still get one posthumously. Like next year.
