Yes, but i like having an extra or two of all the flours we use. Bread, pastry, all purpose, whole wheat, cornmeal, and a bag of brown rice.
Our not so old refrigerator is in our basement now during our current renovation project. The new refrigerator gets delivered next month. We will keep the old one.
I see the plus of having it in advance of hosting a holiday. But I’m not sure it is worth running it all the time? I only hunt for bargains…
I have an extra fridge, too. (With a small freezer compartment full of home made broth) Other than right before and right after parties, i don’t use the fridge part, much. Maybe if the kitchen fridge is full, my husband will put leftover pizza there instead of clearing space for it. I like to go apple picking in the fall, and for the early part of the winter the fridge is full of apples. We still have a couple of caville blanc. I made curry with them a week ago, and they were surprisingly tasty. (I nibbled on them raw as i cooked.)
Once the freezer is full of whatever(and you need to keep it fullish, don’t flap the door) it doesn’t take much energy to run. (You said it was a modern refrigerator/freezer).
If it’s gonna be empty, I say unplug.
Yep, in fact, we here in CA sent oranges as Christmas gifts - and they were appreciated- see “Mission Pack”.
But we were all well fed.
Guess you never read any of those books. The orange was a huge special treat, because that was the only time you got one. Not the same thing at all.
And probably all you got. Maybe a few nuts.
My Dad was born in the back of a car that was his parent’s home in the middle of the Depression. When I was a kid he talked about oranges for Christmas and meant it.
I’m sorry now I couldn’t relate to that then.
My Daddy grew in a huge family. He remembered oranges, a peppermint stick and pencils.
But dang it, his mother’s larder was a wall o’ home canned stuff. She even pressured canned whole chicken in gallon jars.
They grew up tall and strong so they had plenty to eat even if Granny was cooking day in and day out. Poor woman. She weighed about 90lbs soaking wet.
Maybe that’s where the idea came from for this?
