I had one and most of my “friends” were people I know from work. Turns out, away from work, they were overly opinionated assholes who were fond of posting pretty hateful stuff. Since that wasn’t my idea of fun, I just dumped it. I don’t miss it. 59, female - and I’m now retired, so those assholes aren’t even coworkers anymore. ---

I bet in the future, employers will implicitly require prospective employees to have a Facebook page because NOT having one is–in some people’s eyes–tantamount to being an anti-social freak. And if you don’t have a Facebook page, how else can your private life be scrutinized? You could be badmouthing the company right now and they would have no idea! ---

83 years old, and think Facebook represents the pinnacle of narcissism. And think Twitter is also stupid. If anybody wants to get a message to me they can just get out the old goose quill, ink and parchment! ---

Never saw the point of it. For 1 thing why would I suddenly care about high school friends from 30 years ago? And for current friends I really don’t care what they did for dinner last night. I am on twitter but I just read stuff there. ---

And fewer and fewer holdouts lack cellphones. Wondering if social media will ever get to that point. Email is generic. Facebook is a specific product that I don’t particularly want to “buy”. I’m very much on the techy side, so I’m happy to use technology that is useful. Facebook does nothing for me. ---

Female, 66. No FB no twitter no Pinterest. No. FB seems to be a way for people you haven’t spoken to in years to find you. No idea why I would want to participate in that. Twitter seems ridiculous and I don’t get it at all. Pinterest looks like a bigger time waster than SDMB or Ravelry and I don’t need another one. ---

Catching up with old school friends from decades past is often used as a selling point for these things. But I’ve actually hooked up with a couple of old high-school friends and acquaintances, and we’ve grown so far apart that there was no need for any follow-up. One guy who was a pretty good friend even after high school is now a truck driver based out of Los Angeles. He seemed to have gone through a spell as a small-time mob enforcer – the guy who would come break your knees if you didn’t repay the loan shark – and was moaning about how he caught yet another young Filipina girlfriend cheating on him. Um, yeah, nice to catch up with you but gotta go now! ---
