This sucks in so many levels. I feel so sad for the astronauts’ families.
Given the highly toxic nature of the fuel-drenched debris, I’d say that in this instance looting carries its own penalty.
Personally, I hope that the authorities shoot on sight anyone attempting to loot the debris.
I’m having serious flashbacks to the Challenger disaster. I was at work (I’m 50 now) and caught the tv coverage at a customer’s office.
I’m thinking of the families waiting back at Kennedy for their loved ones to come home. 17 years ago, I was thinking about the families there at the launch, watching their loved ones go into space, only to realize that something had gone horribly, horribly wrong…
I’m thinking about the chaotic and terrifying last minutes of both crews.
O my god. I hate this so much.
God be with them all, and all their families, and may their souls all rest in peace.
FUCK FUCK SHIT FUCK GODDAMNIT MOTHERFUCKER SHIT SHIT SHIT AAAAAARGH! WHY WHY WHY?
I as at a movie shoot and one of the actors told me his GF called and told him the shuttle blew up over Dallas. I said “ha ha, very funny.” Normally I would have been watching the NASA TV feed from USA’s site. I rushed home to get the skinny. I wish I never woke up this morning.
Everything sucks. I request a do-over on this entire fucking century.
Another space disaster. FUCK! I heard on the news they are finding “body parts.” That’s really sick.
Well, there’s one reaction to this event and the crew roster I had better not see or I will go nuclear.
Personally, I’m going to go nuclear if this ends the US’s manned space program.
Any word on ground effects? I’m too young for Skylab, but I know that there were all sorts of worries about it coming down uncontrolled. If there is little or no property damage or loss of life on the ground, we are lucky. It’s a tragedy of course, but it could easily be compounded with 3-foot toxic hunks of metal hitting buildings, cars, people.
I assume you mean celebrations of some sort in Palestine.
I’m just saying that the WTC celebrations really pissed me off, and with the deaths of 6 Americans and an Israeli…I won’t be pleased if there is a repeat.
I heard that the debris has started fires, and that some woman in Nacogdoches had a piece fall through her roof.
Local news has reports of debris all over the place in East Texas. No news of anyone being injured on the ground, although every source of smoke in the region has probably been reported to the authorities and the media by now. There’s a chunk of something on the runway at the Nacodoches airport, for instance. 5 feet long is about the biggest I’ve heard of so far.
The falling debris shows up clear as day on WFAA’s doppler radar, stretching southeast of Dallas for a hundred miles or more. WFAA’s video of the breakup is much clearer than anything I’ve seen on CNN.
NPR’s reported that a 6X6 piece of something landed near a school. Still no injuries on the ground. Let’s hope it stays that way.
Aw fuck. Not again.
Aww shit. This is a dark day.
I’m afraid to say that there’s bound to be. Though it’s almost certainly going to be isolated, unrepresentative, and small-scale, but that doesn’t mean it won’t show up on Western media.
The debris field is reported to be 120 miles long. They’ll be picking up shuttle chunks for quite a while.
I’m waiting for the first asshat ‘psychic’ to claim they predicted this.
Grrr…I said something to my stepdad about our having people up there so at least this can’t kill the space program completely (at least not at once) and my stepdad’s response was, “Yes, but should they?” (This is a man so out of it he hadn’t realized that we’d made more than two moon landings. Space is not one of his interests.)
FUCK THAT. I’d volunteer to go up on the next flight if they’d let me.
