Eh. I’ve seen worse. I’d even call it art.

Sorry. Don’t see it.

This is different from taxidermy how? It’s not like these are made from living animals that are being tortured for our amusement. If she had still-breathing animals hooked up to these things with elaborate life-support machinery, I could see outrage. Some of them are actually kind of interesting (love the chicken feet in high heels!).

I’m a vegetarian, and I don’t understand. The animals were killed humanely. If we allow people to kill animals, then what difference does it make what we do with their bodies?

The point is, I think, that the animals were killed for the art, not used after death. Which disgusts me. Use dead animals in your strange compositions, please. Don’t kill fresh ones for them.

You hit the nail on the head, Gadfly. I guess I didn’t make my point clear enough in my OP- it’s the total WANTON nature of killing animals just to make this crappy “art” which makes me so mad.

I have a feeling those bunnies wouldn’t be near as pretty if they were roadkilled. What’s the difference if they’re killed for coats, food, or art? As long as the means of death is quick and as humane as possible, there is no difference. News flash: They _sell_ mice, rabbits, and rats for the express purpose of feeding reptile pets. Which is more humane, being killed quickly for the purpose of art, or being slowly suffocated by a 10-foot python and eaten?

> Is it permissible to kill animals in the name of art?
>
> Most people who see Nathalia’s pictures for the first time are impressed by how beautiful they are. It takes a few seconds before you start to wonder how they have been made. A photo-montage? Some kind of digital manipulation? When you look closer, there is something slightly distorted in the rabbit’s expression. Something slightly abnormal about the face of the cat. Slowly you realise that the animal is dead, that the animal has died for the sake of the picture. Is this acceptable?
>
> One can, of course, choose to think that it is always wrong to kill animals in the name of art. That nothing can defend Nathalia Edenmont. But if you feel more doubtful, we would very much like to explain Nathalia’s reasoning, and how we at Wetterling Gallery argue when we exhibit her art.
>
> Art arouses thoughts and poses questions that are necessary. Nathalia’s beautiful pictures are frightening in the same way that many other beautiful things hide some sort of suffering. One can enjoy beautiful exteriors, or one can go beneath the surface and find things that perhaps you do not want to know about. If Nathalia’s pictures had been repugnant, it would have been easy to reject them. But now they are so beautiful - and the insight into the reality behind them gives rise to thoughts about people’s shallowness and double standards. Many of us eat meat, wear leather or use make-up that has been tested on animals, without this arousing especially strong reactions. But when a picture shows a dead rabbit, all hell breaks loose.
>
> Nathalia grew up in the former Soviet Union, and she has a razor sharp eye for paradoxes and gaps in our western morals. She is not the first to use dead animals in her works of art - that has been done at least since the 1700s, but she is a contemporary debater who provokes questions which nowadays everyone should ask themselves. Her pictures tell lies in front of our faces, but they are not alone in this - the lies exist all around us every day, without us questioning them.
>
> There is nothing illegal in Nathalia’s art. She has killed the animals in as humane a way as possible. Has she been guilty of a moral crime? We do not think so. We think that art is of vital importance. What do you think?

Why not ask some bloody pet shelters about pets that they’re putting down? If they’re not suitable enough, why not get a taxidermist?

As for the folks noting that it’s the same as killing animals to eat or wear them - that’s why I’m a vegetarian.

Just a note - the art is beautiful and disturbing all at once - great stuff, I just wish that the artist would’ve gone about making them in different ways.

It’s definitely cool shit-it’s also hilariously funny and absurd. It has a surreal sense of humor you rarely see in this sort of thing.

The mouse emerging from the eggshell looking tired and sleepy is very cute. The rabbit heads look like some bizarre imagery from Alice in Wonderland come to life. And the chicken legs in high heels is certainly classic-it’s a fashion statement.

Rock on, sick bitch…

I’d say that represent everything that is good about art. It is beautiful, intelligent and it is a thought-provoking comment on society.

All in all, **awesome** work Nathalia.
Ps. I am using “Charles” as wallpaper now 🙂

Alberta has plenty of people coming here trophy hunting. They kill stuff to mount heads on walls pretty much like this lady did. Can’t say I’m for either practice myself.
