It’s interesting to see how different sports handle this problem. All my umpire training has told me that our authority stops at the fence; we run the game, and somebody else runs the stands.

Huh. My training as a softball umpire for house league was the exact opposite: we had the authority to eject anybody, including spectators, from the game. I never heard of anybody actually ejecting a spectator\*, but we did have the ability.

Perhaps this was because there was no one else at the diamond who _could_ police the stands; the umpires were the only objective observers there.

  - Although now that I think about it, I once received a warning from an umpire when I was a spectator. The score was about 20-2 and the leading team was bunting. I shouted out something to the effect of, “You’re bunting up by 18? Show some respect!”
