I felt like i might be drifting into deeper water than i’d feel comfortaable with. I’ll ask someone to take a look at the system.
Think you might be on the right track on the VNETBIOS thing. I’ve just started using different kinds of software of which some have internal browsers installed. That might be knocking stuff out of whack.

Just wanted to let all the people who weighed in help me with this that I started the computer this morning and it fired up beautifully first time (course, I’m not going to risk shutting it down and restarting, just in case this is a fluke).
I haven’t yet backed up and re-installed. Did what handy suggested (Start > Run > (enter without quotes) ‘SFC’) and I think that did the trick (I also then ran every clean up check I could find but I think handy’s plan did it).
So, onwards and upwards with a stress free day in front of me. Thanks again folks, I’m still nervous but very relieved and not a little happy. Hurrah !
