Singers whose voices touch you

Oh, so many great voices! And of course they’re not all what you’d call ‘perfect’, just unique.

INPO,

Marion Hutton(sang with Glenn Miller - my favorite singer, fav of the Big Bands)
Ella Fitzgerald(love "Goodnight, My Love)
Carole King(still have the Tapestry LP, fat lot of good without a turntable, though!)
Lee Greenwood/Nancy Sinatra(here I thought I’d be the only one who liked their stuff together)
Nat King Cole(hands down, the sexiest singing voice)

I know I could add many more, but these are just some of the best there are.

Mick Jagger- So so sexy…I just love “Sympathy for the Devil”…and any other stones song
David Bowie- Fun to listen to, sexy, interesting
Jim Morisson
Janis Joplin
Roger Daltrey
Maynard James Keenan (I may have gotten that wrong…either wya, I mean the lead singer of Tool. Also really like his voice on the Perfect Circle song “Three Libras”)

Natalie Merchant. Something about her moves me.
I agree, George Jones. How could we forget? What we old dudes used to call ‘belly rubbing’ music, because it was good for slow dancing. My, how things have changed.
One more for Patsy Cline. Got to be one of the best, ever. She made my poor little 13 year old heart ache. No genre limitations for that woman.
Melissa Etheridge. Saw her on PBS. Not bad.

The chicks:

Johnette Napolitano
Janis Joplin
Annie Lennox
Beth Gibbons
Carole King
Kate Pearson
PJ Harvey

The blokes:

Jeff Buckley
Kelly Jones
Thom Yorke
Neil Finn
Jimi Hendrix

[sub]Yes, Jimi, dammit.[/sub]

Margo Timmins from the Cowboy Junkies

For current singers, I’ve gotta say that Dido has a very interesting, emotionally laden voice.

And I was surprised to see how long it took for someone to mention Janis Joplin. Listening to her sing Summertime is almost painful.

I’ld like to secong Johnette Napolitano and Shane McGowan.

Both Robert Smith and Morrissey have voices that make you want to bleed.

Peter Murphy, though, is my absolute favorite.

But those are all the sad voices. The voices you listen to when you’re holed up in your room…contemplating
the meaning of your life.

If one could shit daisies, I would every time I hear Jimmy Buffett. I can’t think of a happier voice than his.

Andrea Bocelli

The only person who can give me goosebumps with one hell of a high note

AND I GET TO SEE HIM DEC 29!

I assume you meant Lee Hazlewood (as did I, not that other singer Lee Hazelwood who I always confuse him with  )

Will have to go with Euty and second **Tish Hinojosa **. How much do I like her music? Well, I asked my new brother-in-law to sing her “Who Showed You The WAy To My Heart?” at our wedding just 3 years ago.

Also, I believe **poohpah chalupa **was the first to mention the inimitable ** Alison Krauss ** whose incredible soprano, among its other virtues, can peel paint from 10 yards. I once discouraged some neighbors, who had a habit of parking their car on the street and playing their idiot thumping bass loud enough to bother me indoors by pulling my car out of the driveway, parking behind them and putting on Allison at full blast. It stopped the problem.

Again, props to **Patsy Cline **whose hit version of Willie’s “Crazy” still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Which led me to **k.d. lang ** who can sing them all, but reaches me most with her “Shadowland” set, done by the same producer and at the same studios where Ms. Cline recorded. Some years ago I heard the song “Lock, Stock & Teardrops” on the radio and was hooked.

**Janis Ian **has affected me since “Society’s Child” and her voice has matured beautifully, though she unfortunately hasn’t enjoyed as much popularity lately.

And Juice Newton who could wring lots of emotion from a song like “Break It To Me Gently” and boogie with “Queen of Hearts.”

…and the road goes on forever

Sarah Mcleod.

Not really known outside Australia, but I love her voice.

Oh yeah, my mum.

She’s not professional anymore, but she sang her way through uni.

Ummm…are we talking about the same person here? Allison’s voice is a delicate instrument, not hardly the kind of sound that would impact seismatic bass pounding cranked up by self-centered idiots.
“…peel paint…” ? Her voice is angelic, not ear piercing. I can’t tell from your post whether or not you actually like her, although if you possess her CD’s, I’d have figured that you did (unless you purchased them for the sole purpose of annoying your neighbors).

Touched from the very first time I heard -

Western Stars - kd lang
Crucify - Tori Amos
Song to the Siren - Elizabeth Fraser
Mandinka - Sinead O’Connor
Moon is Mine - Eddi Reader (of Fairground Attraction)
Low Red Moon - Tanya Donnelly (of Belly)
Running to Stand Still - Bono
Creep - Thom Yorke
Daughter - Eddie Vedder
Debaser - Black Francis

and I maintain

Always Look On the Bright Side of Life - Eric Idle

Many of my favourites have been mentioned already, but I’d like to throw in two more names:

David Sylvian, lead singer of Japan in the early eighties and solo since about 1984. A bit of an acquired taste maybe, but I tihnk his voice his beautiful. Songs like Ghosts (with Japan) and Forbiden colours (solo) still send shivers down my spine.

Bryan Ferry, former lead singer of Roxy Music, maybe the most underrated pop/rock group of the seventies. His solo carreer was less impresive, until he recorded the CD As time goes by* in 1999 - one of my ten all-time favourite CD’s.

Do not, I repeat, do not listen to the late Eva Cassidy if you’ve been drinking. Most especially do not do so if you’re reading her bio website.

Especially if you want to keep that “tough guy” image.

Hello?

Where are all the Tom Waits fans here?

Put on “The Piano Has Been Drinking” and I’m sitting on a bar stool with a warm beer and an ashtray full of Camels. Put on “Shore Leave” and I’m shooting billiards with a midget in Hong Kong. Put on “Time” or “Blind Love” and you’ll find me in a pool of tears.

Jeff Buckley
Very late in career-era Billie Holiday

Elvis, Patsy Cline, Sinatra are the big three. Jerry Garcia, Thom Yorke, Cecilia Bartoli, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton get honorable mention. I wish I had some original ones, but I got here late. postCount := postCount + 1.
