Today is [Melanoma Monday, part of a month-long effort](https://www.aad.org/public/spot-skin-cancer/programs/skin-cancer-awareness-month) to get people to help themselves prevent cancer.

The American Academy of Dermatology is offering [free screenings through the SPOTme program](https://www.aad.org/public/spot-skin-cancer). If you have a suspicion mole or spot, you can get it looked at by a participating dermatologist for free.

Trust me, being a cancer survivor is not something to aspire to. I had it “easy” and my life was still turned upside down with a boatload of debt and literal scars on my face and vocal cords.
Use sunscreen, wear hats and long sleeves in the sun.
