# Slapped for referencing "Oh, me so horny!"

Had you said, “I understand that this is a movie reference, a song reference, and more or less a very common meme, but it is specifically banned on the SDMB for being XYZ,” I could understand. But since you didn’t say that, well, it seems ignorant and stupid. Also, it makes it sound as though I came up with a politically incorrect thing myself and I am representing or endorsing those negative qualities.
It’s also stupid because the song by 2 Live Crew was meta in the first place, turning the line from Full Metal Jacket into a joke that was not in itself sexist, racist, and misogynistic. The _point_ was that it was a laughable line from the movie! (Sorry if you don’t know all this–you very well might not.)
And this was in a thread in which there were multiple couch jokes about JD Vance. How are all those politically correct, I wonder? They all involve trashing a person about a rumor that is known to be false. So it’s jarring to see the mod suddenly get panty-twisted over a thing that everybody knows and has been a joke since the 1980s.
It’s just more heavy-handed and square modding on this board, IMHO. Lighten the fuck up. Thanks!

What does the fact that it’s a cultural reference have to do with the fact that it’s sexist, racist, and misogynistic?

With the context you’ve provided, I can see why you’re upset, but you can’t really assume that “everyone knows” either the oeuvre of 2 Live Crew or the dialogue from Full Metal Jacket.
I vaguely recognized it as some old song lyric, but had no idea what the joke was supposed to be.

But understanding the reference, at least to some degree, is required to call it politically incorrect. I actually don’t think referring to it is sexist, racist, or misogynistic. A Vietnamese prostitute says it in the movie. Perhaps the idea is that it’s racist to reference the fact that non-native speakers of English don’t always speak it perfectly.

Correct. Because despite being from a movie, it is indeed completely inappropriate as it’s sexist, racist and misogynistic.
A lot of older references are not appropriate, especially not fully in context.

Are you saying that it was those things in the movie itself? If not, then how does merely referencing the line become those things? I think we need to get [A. J. Ayer - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._J._Ayer) on the line.

The words themselves are not in any way offensive. Understanding the reference is _required_ to take offense from them.

I was not the mod in this situation. But my general take is that any literary reference (using “literary” in a very broad and figurative sense) that isn’t nearly universally recognized needs to stand on its own. Because you have to assume that some of the readers won’t be aware of the context.
If you provide the context, i think you can “get away with” more. But i don’t believe you did here.
