Well this is my first post, I’ve been lurking for a while and I just wanted to throw this out to you guys to see what everyone has to say. Um, it’s a bit out there. Here’s a hypothetical situation that some friends of mine were discussing: Say that you are a young person, old enough to be living out on your own, but you’re still living with family because it more convenient and cheaper. Your parents share one bedroom, and you share another with a sibling. This residence is an apartment, and is just temporary for your parents until they decide where they want to retire. Your parents decide to take an extended vacation and leave the country for 3 months, giving you the option to move in to their room. Assuming that they know your plans and are OK with them, would you move into their room? Would you sleep on their bed (this implies putting your sheets on their mattress)? And the big question, would you engage in any sort of sexual activity on this bed (this of course is not something your parents know you have planned)? So the choices are thus: No sex at all, or attempt to schedule your activites around your sibling since you two share a room, or have sex in your parent’s room. Would the answer to this question make any difference if you used your own mattress and lugged it in to the parents’ room? If your parents had moved out permanently and gave you their furniture instead of simply taking a long vacation? ---

I really don’t know. Would the thought of having sex in your parents bed be any worse than the thought of sleeping where your parents had sex? [sub]The question really doesn’t apply to me anyway, I’m too pathetic to get sex anywhere[/sub]😃 P.S. Welcome the the SDMB ---

It’s a piece of freakin’ furniture… I don’t understand the emotional and symbolic attachments people have to beds. The parents aren’t using it. The parents gave the “young person” permission to use it so it’s safe to assume there prolly isn’t a hidden camera in the room. Why not have sex? Sheets get washed. Who the hell cares? Am I alone on this? I must just be nuts because it seems like a whole lotta people _would_ feel weird about sleeping (or not) in their parents bed. ---

I got over the “Oooo, it’s my/my boyfriend’s MOM’S bed! I’m so NASTY!” thing back when I was still in high school. If they leave me in the house for three months and allow me the use of their room, they KNOW I’m going to be having sex in it. As long as I don’t stain the mattress and make sure it’s cleaned up with fresh sheets when they get home (which is only polite anyhow), who cares? ---

Well, thank you all for responding. I was hoping to actually get some people who say “No way, that’s disrespecting your parents!” or something like that. It was actually my friends who had real issues with this situation. I didn’t think anything of it, but they thought I was some sort of freak. Just looking for validation that I’m not. 😉 I’m gonna have to figure out how to do all the smilies and other SDMB stuff. ---

I’ve had a little experience with this :D…and I didn’t hesitate for a minute. We washed and dryed her sheets afterwards. No big deal at all. ---

2 months ago my parents decided to get themselves some new king size mattresses. Well, since my and my wife split, I had been sleeping on my futon, so they gave me the old mattresses, which are still in good condition. Aaahhhh… king size comfort. So anyway, I don’t have a problem with sleeping in my parents (old) bed. ---

This question is so stupid!! I can’t believe you asked it. Have you ever thought about getting some help? Next time you go to a nice Hotel, freak yourself out by thinking about how many people fucked on the bed, then slash your wrists. ---

Well, thanks for the warm welcome WillyK. The whole reason I asked is because I thought the that most people would have no problem with this, but apparently some of my more conservative friends freaked at this idea. The whole point was that the bed was your parents’ and not some random bed at a hotel where you know everyone gets it on. So it’s not me who has a problem, but my friends. ---

Actually, I’m a pretty conservative person also, but I don’t ever think about people having sex on beds when I sleep in them. It’s just a bed.
