Actually, we do.

Note that there is an ellipsis only at the end.

And, you know, if you invited me over more often, I’d use up that mustard, and you wouldn’t have to throw it out.
Hmmph.

Leftover corned beef is for hash. Do people put mustard on that?

This reminded me of an occasion many years ago when an aunt and uncle of mine came to lunch with my parents and me at our house. When they arrived they produced a box of chocolates (as one does) presumably as a thank you. After lunch the chocs were opened and we all had some, a lot were left.

When my aunt and uncle left, my aunt picked up the box and took it away with her.

It’s a cheap move, and I’d be feeling a bit disrespected if someone pulled that move on me. Mustard really isn’t enough to bring with you in the first place–buy a cake or bottle of wine on the way at least. To then take back the measly offering at the end of the night is to add insult to injury. It all represents a level of obliviousness about the time, effort and money involved in having guests for dinner. He treated it like a free meal.

I agree with the “depends on the relationship” crowd. If it was a business dinner I would leave it… if it was my long time buddy I might take it if I thought they weren’t going to use it.

I’m still trying to grasp how someone with mustard in their user name doesn’t have Dijon on hand. I currently have Dijon, Yellow, Brown, Powder, Seeds, and a very hot Pommery Firehouse in a stone jar.

Just so you don’t think I’m a hypocrite… I’ve got three nice russet bakers, tater tots, crispy crowns, frozen fries, hash brown patties, potato salad, a couple of kinds of chips and I’m sure I’m forgetting some others.

And you can buy it at any grocery store , it not like to have get it at a specialty shop . It was a little on the odd side to me.

First of all, let me apologize to all of humanity for not having Dijon on hand. I do like it. I occasionally purchase it. Sometimes I have some, sometimes I don’t. This time I didn’t.

A little more info for your consideration: All 3 diners remarked on how good the Dijon tasted with the corned beef. All agreed it was a positive contribution to the meal.

Also, there was maybe one good-sized leftover portion, um, left over. If the Dijon had been left, I would have dressed that last slab with it the next day. As it was, I ate it nekkid.

And here is something that has just recently occurred to me. A good host might have offered up that last plank of corned beef for husband of C2 to bring home to the absent C2 wife, who missed the engagement due to work. That would have been a very nice gesture on my part (and I’m surprised that no one here has taken me to task over it).

Perhaps C2 husband is cranking up his own thread on a forum somewhere about what a vulgarian I am.
mmm

There are some friends of mine where I wouldn’t be surprised if they did that. Others that I would. It’s not something that would necessarily ping my radar too hard. There’s one friend’s family I go to parties, and the brother brings a 12 pack, and, when they’re leaving, if it’s not all finished, they take the rest home. That I find a bit odd, but apparently that’s perfectly normal in their family/social group, so, whatever. A jar of mustard I don’t find as odd. But it’s still slightly outside what is usually normal in my circles.

I thought the scenario behavior was weird and rude anyway, but this really cinches it.
