Any Sloan fans wandering around in here? The new album came out this week in the US (I think Canada got it a few months ago). It’s taking me some time to form impressions of it all due to its size (30 tracks). I’m really liking it so far though, especially _I Understand_ (except the needless and uninteresting padding at the end), _Before The End Of The Race_, and especially _Fading Into Obscurity_, which may be my favorite Sloan track since _I Can Feel It_, which was (checking Wikipedia)… wow, thirteen years ago (ten years ago for me - as I got into Sloan soon after _One Chord To Another_ came out). :eek: Anyone else pick it up? Anyone even heard of Sloan? Will this sink as fast as my Aimee Mann threads? Stay tuned! 😃 ---

I always liked Sloan. I haven’t heard the new one, nor do I have any other their stuff, other than a select few mp3’s. I saw them live about 10 years ago. I see your Aimee Mann and raise you a Loud Family/Game Theory… 😃 ---

Sloan are awesome. I didn’t know that they had a US following at all… one of our best kept secrets. Like the Tragically Hip. I will keep my ears out for Sloan’s new stuff on my desperately horrible radio station. I only get one where I am living, but thank god for CanCon. ---

Sigh. I didn’t even know they had a new album out. My Sloan news has been precious little since I moved from New Brunswick. I will be looking into it. I was just playing _Lemonzinger_ in the car a couple of days ago, and just dug out \*One Chord To Another \* yesterday after work, though I haven’t popped it in yet. I’ve been feeling Sloan-y lately. My Sloan-y senses must have been tingling. You get those from being a Maritimer. 😉 ---

I haven’t really listened to them since Navy Blue, but I really liked their output to that point, so I ought to check this out. I’m really surprised they were never bigger here in the states, though I’m glad that the Tragically (overrated) Hip 🙂 never made the border jump. Total props for mentioning the should-be-legendary Scott Miller’s bands, An Arky. (Though he is legendary with other should be legendary pop songsters, such as the wonderful Aimee Mann.) ---

I have a couple of Sloan cds but haven’t much listened to them. They haven’t grabbed me as much as some similar bands like Teenage Fanclub. ---

I haven’t heard Sloan - but TF are huge, huge fans of the seminal 70’s power-pop band Big Star - one of my all-time favorites. Does Sloan have a Big Star feel, too? ---

[/QUOTE] From what I’ve heard, not as much but a little. My impression was that Sloan had a bit more of a Britpop thing going on, but I could be mistaken. If you want to talk about other bands of interest that could be a good discussion, but I don’t want to hijack the thread. My other post here comes off as more dismissive than I meant it to. I should listen to the Sloan cds I have more. They’re not bad. I guess I was just saying that Teenage Fanclub is a similar band that’s more to my tastes. ---

[/QUOTE] I listened to the two songs linked to by **Slacker** (thank you very much by the way). Their stuff is pleasant - not great to my ears. Not as hooky as I like my powerpop and doesn’t have that tinge of melancholy I look for. Kinda like **Grandaddy** - really good, but not quite enough to push them over the edge into great…just my $.02 and the songs are certainly worth a listen and a discussion.
