This week’s column by Cecil, [What’s up with compostable plastics?](http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2915/whats-up-with-compostable-plastics), has an illustration by the illustrious **slug**. If I’m not mistaken, the front of the Zamboni-like machine says “Stover/2010.” Is this a silent nod to the Smokey Stover cartoons of Bill Holman?

Probaly not. The Stover Manufacturing and Engine Company manufactured kerosene and gasoline powered stationary engines for use on the American farm. Between 1895 and 1941, Stover made more than 277,000 engines of various sizes and uses.

Note that **corn stover** is also referred to in the column. I’m wondering if the artwork has a treble meaning perhaps.

Well, Slug has always been a bit of a treble maker.
