> At any rate when Obama said the same thing about refreshing Helicopter one or whatever they call it, I doubt you said a word.

I don’t know the specific issue you’re referencing, but the president’s helicopters are manned by the Marine Corps. When he is aboard one, that helicopter uses the call sign “Marine One.” Any Air Force plane he is on (not just the specific and customized ones under discussion) will use the callsign “Air Force One”. If he’s ever aboard an Army or Navy aircraft, that aircraft will use the callsign “Army One” or “Navy One.” The one time in recent history a president flew on a commercial aircraft, it used the callsign “Executive One.”

Less formally, the presidential limo is sometimes called “Cadillac One”, but this is just a nickname.
Anyway, since the “real” Air Force One needs to be capable of being a flying command center in the event of war, I can understand why the price tag is pretty hefty. No real surprise that Trump, who thinks nukes are just regular bombs but awesomer, is clueless on this.

Same thing Trump’s doing now.

So he consulted an expert on the situation and made an informed decision. Unlike Trump’s SOP of pulling non-facts out of his ass.

Just so you know, the current AF1 is 25 years old, is the last (two actually) of it’s model flying and spare parts are increasingly scarce.

In a Fiscal Responsibility Summit, Obama took a question from Senator McCain about the cost of Marine One. Obama replied that he shared the Senator’s concern, that he had been working with the Secretary of Defense, and that the program was being reviewed. The program was later modified.

Donald Trump tweeted about it. And had his facts wrong.

Totally the same thing.

Okay, I’ll give him credit for something; speaking to the President of Taiwan.

A practically harmless act that signals to a significant rival that “we do what we like and we don’t have to ask your permission who to talk to.” He didn’t technically violate the One China principle, but showed a degree of resolve and principle in speaking to the only Chinese head of state who was actually elected.

The gasping over the alleged stupidity of his move is, IMHO, totally wrong. “We should do it this way 'cause we always have” is not a a strategy. Showing resolve and strength in a peaceful manner is a good thing - indeed, it’s precisely what Trump is NOT doing regarding Russia, and people are rightly ripping him for that.

Was the call a wise, principled move meant to show resolve to the mainland Chinese government? Or was the call made at the prompting of Bob Dole, who worked as a lobbyist for the Taiwan government over the past six months to arrange the call, as [The New York Times reported](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/06/us/politics/bob-dole-taiwan-lobby-trump.html)?

Whether the call was “practically harmless” remains to be seen.

Come on. Seriously? Instead of relying on an advisor he says what he thinks himself that the President before him thought as well. That is, that the spending doesn’t seem right when looking at the raw numbers. On the surface it looks excessive.

I welcome the look at contracts like that. Like Obama seemed to do initially.

2. [Here’s a cite](http://www.defenseone.com/politics/2015/02/buying-new-air-force-one-complicated/104220/?oref=search_air%20force%20one) for the chronically idiotic.

> Since the 747-200 hasn’t been built in nearly a quarter century, replacing broken parts is tough. In fact, some of the companies that built the original parts no longer exist. There have been times when spare parts have been taken from retired jetliners parked in desert, according to Air Force and industry officials. Sometimes parts have to be specially made. A new plane, experts say, would not only boost reliability but improve efficiency.

You’re so narrow minded, singly focused on smearing the Republican that you can’t see the point I was making - it’s not that AF-1 needs to be updated, it’s that you take exception to the Pres nominee’s criticism of the expense. As if it’s the single most stupid thing a person in his position has done.

Obama before him said the same thing in regards to a different AF1 M1.

Trump has no idea what the cost is. Neither does anyone else [other than the GAO.](http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-misleading-tweet-new-air-force-one-price-2016-12) The whole thing is at a very preliminary stage. Boeing has received 170 million for design and specs.

Trump exaggerated the cost. And I’m sure he has no understanding of what it takes to convert an airliner into the Flying White House.
