So we get a link from **Smash** to a 25-year-old paper expressing concern about that **new** sweetener, aspartame, which has long been superseded by a great number of quality studies and [reviews](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17828671?ordinalpos=5&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum) demonstrating its safety.

If things run true to form, **Smash** will run to sites like [this one](http://www.rense.com/general67/rum.htm) to gather up pearls from the Aspartame Is Teh Evil crowd, mutter darkly about Donald Rumsfeld and corporate conspiracies and when all else fails, fling some more insults that were the height of fashion in 1900.

Ah missed this one.

> [@lexi](#):
>
> I don’t know what threads FinnAgain was reading, but I sure didn’t see SmashTheState being proved a liar.

Yet more proof that despite pencils dropping, reality exists independent of perception. 😃

The first, and most egregious lie that was rather handily refuted was the lie that “Most anthropologists agree that the prophets, fakirs, saints, and shamans of times past were schizophrenic,”. Smashy never even pretended to back this up, because he simply invented it.

The second, rather hilarious lie was that “For example, in Latin American culture, it is expected that if a close family member dies, the family will see and talk to the person’s spirit.” This, too, was mere woo-mongering that Smashy decided to make up in order to see if he could get away with lying in GD. Of course, [he couldn’t](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=11376633&postcount=45). Equally as a matter of course, he then retreated from his lie, pleading ignorance and claiming “This was simply the example used in the DSM-IV Casebook while discussing the relative nature of mental illness to culture.”

Of course, the actual cite/quote for such a claim was conspicuously absent.
Do you really want to place odds on whether or not the DSM IV Casebook actually says that in Latin American culture it’s expected that anybody who loses a relative will hallucinate contact with that dead person? Or is Smashy distorting (or simply inventing) an actual quote?

Now he’s busy making stuff up about initiation experiences in various cultures.

> [@lexi](#):
>
> He provided cites,

Not for his assertions.
If I claim that tacos cause people’s heads to explode and I offer a cite on the manufacture of linoleum, people would call foul. Smashy lied about the views of “most anthropologists”. When caught at lying, he offered up some books (at least one of whose contents he rather egregiously distorted and whose author has gone on record decrying the intellectually dishonest woo-meisters misuse of his text), and zero quotes. He never even pretended to offer support for his lie about “most anthropologists”, instead he was busy trying to change the subject.

> [@lexi](#):
>
> and his posts on neurodiversity were no in way refuted.

I’m not sure what you even think you mean.
Aside from the fact that his basic assertions were shown to be false, fictional, or distortions, or to be totally unsupported… what do you mean they weren’t refuted?

> [@lexi](#):
>
> His posts can be pedantic and wordy at times, but he makes points that lead me, and others who actually read them think. .

By the way, this is an ignorantly condescending bit of mind reading, and I wish y’all would quit it.

‘Smash is so brilliant that the only reason one would disagree with him is if they’re not actually reading what he writes.’

This thread is now about pie.

\*A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough shell that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Pies can be either “filled”, where a dish is covered by pastry and the filling is placed on top of that, “top-crust,” where the filling is placed in a dish and covered with a pastry/potato mash top before baking, or “two-crust,” with the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell. Pies can be a variety of sizes, ranging from bite-size to ones designed for multiple servings.

Reference to “pyes” as food items appeared in England (in a Latin context) as early as the 12th Century, but no unequivocal reference to the item with which the article is concerned is attested in the Oxford English Dictionary until the 14th century (Oxford English Dictionary sb pie).\*

I like pie.

I prefer a thousands of years old sweetener known as ‘SUGAR’ for its positive health benefits over high-fructose corn syrup.

It tastes better too. I don’t like “sweeteners”. They tend to be too damn sweet, and they seem to have weird (nasty) aftertaste.

But I must gently remind you, this thread is now about pie 😉

Pie needs Sugar. So it’s hardly a hijack you pedantic fuck!

The rich and the poor are quite aware that the system is designed to rape people in the ass; the rich because they get to do the raping, and the poor because they’re the ones being raped.

Convoluted logic. The thing that separates them, is what they have in common. But if you want to know who the police work for, start a union , picket a coal mine or go on a peace march. It will become clear.

It should probably be noted that the only reason anybody wouldn’t prefer key lime pie is that they’re only pretending to have eaten it, and they’re just going along with the cool kids and pretending the lemon meringue is where it’s at. The most transcendent of pie eaters all agree that key lime pie is truly a revelation of flavor awesomeness.

GOOD Key Lime Pie is. The real thing. Made with real keys, preferably ground up into a shiny powder and evenly distributed through the lime custard (does that make it lime 'tard?).

BAD Key Lime Pie (such as is found in freezer sections of grocery stores and, sadly, many pretentious restaurants (sorry, big word, _mea culpa_!, means places the monocle-wearing neckbearded factotums go)), should be wiped from the face of the planet as a revolting joke on humanity.

Or sent with compliments to **Smash** and his union. 😛
